NEWS FLASH
Monday 15th March 1999 - Lewis "robbed" of undisputed heavyweight title
Lennox Lewis is furious after his undisputed world boxing heavyweight fight against WBA and IBF champion Evander Holyfield controversially ended in a draw.
Lewis, the WBC title holder believes along with most of the world that he should now have all 3 title belts to his name after his punishing performance against Holyfield in Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.
The statistics clearly show Lewis as out-performing his rival Holyfield. Lewis landed 348 punches on Holyfield, many more than Holyfield's own total of 130 yet suprisingly Eugenia Williams, the American judge insisted Holyfield out-punched Lewis and scored the fight as 115-113 in favour of Holyfield.
The result is just another ugly incident in boxing's recent history and has sparked numerous suggestions of corruption mostly aimed at Don King, boxings infamous promoter. Jack Newfield - top boxing writer for 30 years - states that "Don King had everything to lose if Lewis won because he controls Evander Holyfield." "Now he's looking forward to another payday when the re-match is staged." Lewis's mum Violet was so infuriated by the result that she even confronted Holyfield in the ring but he did not respond.
The stage is now set for a re-match sometime later this year, no arrangement has been finalised as of yet though.
Manny Steward, Lewis's trainer claims that the shock draw was a stitch-up to ensure a big money rematch and that it had already been decided before the fight even begun. He added "There should be an American government investigation into this fight." This is just one of numerous similar opinions from many top celebraties and boxing fans alike, including ex-boxing stars Frank Bruno and Chris Eubank, who claimed that "Lennox won at least 10 of the 12 rounds and that's being kind to Holyfield." The general opinion seems to be that the re-match should be staged in England so that justice will prevail.
