In Memory…

We were all shocked and saddened by the sudden and tragic passing of Marleana Massey. Below some members of TEECH share their memories and feelings about Marleana.

Marleana
By Julie Ngyen

Marleana called me one evening telling me she saw a homeschool open house flyer in Jack and Jill with my name on it, she was so excited she didn't realize there was a group in the area, we talked on the telephone quite a while.
She told me she had four boys, Zach whom she had been homeschooling for a while decided to pull him out of public school in the middle of third grade, Reese had Cerebral Palsy so she knew he would need some special education but she was up for the challenge, Aiden was a toddler and Ethan a baby.
She had to work the night of the open house. We were still at the meeting when she got off so she stopped in and introduced herself. She had many challenges while homeschooling, but never gave up. She knew she could turn to any of us mom's and ask questions or advice.
She brought joy to so many, I will always remember her smile and the time she took to be friendly.
Marleana my friend you are missed dearly.
 Love from your friend Julie

Remembrance
By Cyndi Mears

I really have such mixed emotions on writing this article as Marleana is probably the closest person I have had in my life to pass away. Marleana was a wonderful, sweet person. Her voice alone, had such a sweet, caring sound. She was willing to help out in anyway she could. I know Marleana

had some difficult days, as she had very young children to care for, I remember those days very well. She was also in the midst of a difficult pregnancy, that was something I could not fully understand.
However, I know she was being lifted up in prayer by so many people in regards to her pregnancy. I have no idea why God called her home at such a young age and in the midst of caring for her husband and young children, but I do hold to God's word and this verse is very helpful in my life; "we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)
My prayer now is for Jason, Zach, Aiden, Reese, Ethan, and Marty. I pray for God's strength and healing power! (Hebrews 4:16 "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.") I pray they continue to look to God each and everyday throughout their lives! I also pray that God uses this seemingly awful situation to bring others to Him!
From an email to TEECH list serve, 12/4/06

Hey all,

I am truely sorry that I have not been participating and helping out as much as I should. I will truely try to help more.

I also just want to let you know how much I appreciate all of you. You have all helped with Zach getting to come even when I have had other things that have come up. We are really blessed to be part of such a fantastic home school group. Thanks again for all the things you have all done to make our home school group possible.

Love ya all,
Marleana

Coop Classes
By Sean M.
(10 years old)

I had a fun time in the homeschool group in 2006. I thought all of the countries were fun to learn about in co-op. I liked a lot of the food. I liked the Japanese meat and the Swedish meat to. It was fun making the Swedish horse out of soap.
Also, it was fun making the German advent calendar with the flaps. The Christmas party was a lot of fun. I made a lot of crafts to take home. Thank you for all that everyone did for the homeschool group.

Pictured is Sean making his gingerbread house, a German Christmas tradition we had a lot of fun with.

The other picture is of our group field trip to the Swedish- American Museum in Swedesburg, IA. A great addition while learning about the country of Sweden-Cyndi

Science Class
By Nancy Wagner
(Mom)

Interested in some hands-on science for your students this semester? Join the co-op class every other Thursday at the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello.
We had our first class already and we covered static electricity and electric circuits. We tested different substances to find out what would transmit electricity and what would not as well as exploring static electricity with a balloon, comb, salt, and pepper. The February 1st class will cover magnetism with 4 different hands-on learning activities. Feb 15 and March 1 we will explore "Toys in Space." March 15th we will be doing "Elementary Engineering: Bridges and Structures." For March 29th and April 12th, we will be doing Microscopes and Cells.
Kathy Vance at the Extension Office has rounded up enough microscopes everyone will be able to use one by themselves, but we don't yet know how many of them are actually functional, lol. If you have a functional microscope already and can send it with your child, they would be learning on the microscope they will be using at home, which will be an advantage.
The last class is for April 26th and we are going to do a two hour class on GPS systems, borrowing a kit from the extension office with 10 individual units. We will probably have to pair some of the kids up because there won't be enough for each child to have their own, so if you have one, send it along as well.
These are the classes for grades 4 and up. For the younger kids, grades 3 down, we will not be doing microscope nor GPS. We will be coming up with something simpler for them to do those weeks, undecided as yet. So come and join the fun.

Home School Band!

By Cyndi Mears (Mom)

Several children in the TEECH Homeschool group began individual music lessons at the end of August 2006. A group of 12 children practiced very hard on their specific instrument, learning notes, sounds, and songs. Their instructor Mrs. Jean Mengel has great knowledge in teaching several kinds of instruments.

The band came together, starting in October, and began weekly practices as a group. They worked on songs such as Jingle Bells, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, and Good King Wenceslas. Sunday, December 17th, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., the children presented their songs during a Christmas Concert opened to everyone. We enjoyed the music, snacks, and fellowship that afternoon.

If you would like to join the homeschool music lessons/band, now would be a great time! We will start individual lessons this week, Jan. 11th. Then join as a band again on Jan. 18th. If you would like to join, contact someone that is already in the band or the instructor Mrs. Jean Mengel mustjean@louisacomm.net.

Mom's Time Out... What is it..
By Cyndi Mears (Mom)

Well, just as the name states! A time where a mom can get away from it all and just enjoy a few hours out. November's Mom's Time Out was held at the home of Michelle Humphrey. We had an enjoyable time of talking, eating, and making a craft to take home. Everyone was asked to bring a roll of toilet paper, to make the "surprise craft".

As you will notice in the picture, those rolls of toilet paper turned into a wonderful seasonal decoration, a pumpkin!! If you would like to host a Mom's Time Out or attend a Mom's Time Out, just contact Nancy Wagner at kidsrus@louisacomm.net. Teri Channey took this picture of Michelle Humphrey, Eunice Hamilton, Julie Nguyen, Diana Burden, Nancy Wagner, Cyndi Mears during the November Mom’s Night Out.

Mom’s Night Out for February
Hosted by Cyndi Mears (Mom)

This is a great night to get out of the house and enjoy the company of ADULTS!! Sometimes us homeschooling mom's feel like "If only I could have an adult conversation", "A little time away would be nice" or "I can't answer an other question or I'll explode".

Well if you have ever had these thoughts or would just like to come see what happens at these things, I would like to encourage you to attend a Mom's Time Out! The next M.T.O. is scheduled for February 22nd at 6:00 pm. This will take place at the home of Cyndi Mears', (address edited out for website). If you need directions, just call or e-mail Cyndi at (phone # edited out) or mirrors93@iowatelecom.net. Look for more details to follow in a later e-mail!!

Mt Pleasant Hospital Field Trip
Monday, February 26 (tentative)

The Tentative Date for the February Field Trip to the Mt. Pleasant Hospital is February 26th, a Monday (a time is not set up yet, but she was thinking it would be around 1 or 1:30).

Dianna Burden is setting this up and NEEDS a head count as far as to how many children/adults will be attending. If you could either give Dianna a quick phone call at (phone # edited out) or e-mail Cyndi Mears at mirrors93@iowatelecom.net to say YES OR NO as to your plans to attend that would be greatly appreciated.

Again, whether you ARE OR ARE NOT attending, please respond as soon as possible!

The area's that are being planned to visit are:

  • Surgery
  • Laboratory
  • Maintenance/Mechanical Area
  • Housekeeping

I have only heard great reports on how this field trip went the last time the TEECH group attended, it sounds like it was very hands on! Please call or e-mail as soon as possible!

Thanks!!
Dianna Burden

Mom’s Night Out for March
Hosted by Julie Nguyen
Tentatively set for Friday, March 16th at 6 pm.

Lewellen Quaker House in Salem

Field trip on March 9, 2007, to the LewellenQuaker House in Salem, south of Mt. Pleasant. We are scheduled for a 10:00 tour. There is a charge of $1 per student and $2 per adult for the tour of the house.

Nancy is hosting this field trip. The Lewellen Quaker House was a stop on the Underground Railway prior to the end of the Civil War. If you wish further information prior to the trip, visit here and/or here. Another site that gives an interesting history of the Iowa portion of the Underground Railroad is here.

Insect Field Trip
By Cyndi Mears
(still a Mom)

What:
A Field Trip
Where:
STARR'S CAVE in Burlington, IA
When:
Thursday, April 5th
Information:

Our TEECH group will be INSECT CATCHING in the beautiful Spring air! (If we happen to have inclement weather, we could reschedule, although this could be a problem as their calendars fill up fast. They said they could keep us busy indoors if needed.)

We will meet in Burlington at Starr's Cave at 9:30 a.m. We will start the morning off by going on a hike to catch insects. Along the way we will learn about the difference between a spider and an insect.

We will also learn what many insects look like and are called. The nets and jars will be provided.

Everyone is asked to pack a lunch for their family as we will enjoy a picnic lunch together once our insect "class" is over. The afternoon will be left open to the group as there are many other opportunities to pursue in the park.

You will have the chance to go through the Cave as it opens April 1st (old clothes & flashlights would be good if you plan to do this), your family can go through the Nature Center where someone will be available to answer questions if you have any, there are also many hiking trails if you choose.

If you and your family would like to attend this field trip, watch for the reminder to go out at a later date along with an RSVP to be given to Cyndi Mears so we can know how many to plan for that morning. If you have any questions you can contact Cyndi at (phone # edited out) or mirrors93@iowatelecom.net

Teech Checking Account
By Julie Nguyen (Mom)

Teech now has a checking account. We have a balance of $78.50. The money has come from Box Tops for Education points and Our Family upc's. We are also saving pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House, Campbell's Labels, and Tyson Project A+ pull tabs for play equipment.

We will discuss how to use this money and what to order from the points we get at a future meeting.

Keep saving it adds up fast.

The Thief Who Is The Son of The King
By Morgan H. (9 years old)

One day the son of the king ran away and never wanted to come back. The king was afraid he had died. He said to his guards to go find his son but they did not know what he looks like, they have never seen the prince before. So the king gave the guards a picture of the prince. The guards went out and found him. It was a relief, but the prince did not want to go home yet. However, the guards said his dad the king was sad so the prince said ok and he went home. He told his father he was a thief and the king was very very angry and said to the prince YOU ARE GROUNDED!! So, the prince learned his lesson and never ran away or stole anything again.

Turkey Blessing
By the Wahldice Family

This used to be your bird god, scratching in the peas, now he’s a tasty blessing, a gift from thou to we.

We raised a bunch of turkeys, all for us to eat, but coyotes came and all they left were feathers head, and feet.

This turkey’s body survived the raid, and with his carcass his feed bill paid.

Bacteria
By James W. (13 years old)

There once was a man named Mack,
who decided to kill all Bac.
But because of his suggestion,
many had indigestion,
and his name was covered in black.

Dragons Dessert

By Cody H. (11 years old)

Once upon a time in a far, far away land. There lived a dragon, a very lonely dragon. This dragon rarely got what he wanted to eat. One day he was walking alone in the forest like usual, but this time was different. This time he did not see the deer getting what he wanted to eat neither the antelope, snake, or frogs. They were roaming around like starved people. this made the dragon sad. He wanted to know what was going on so he flew up to the top of the forest and he saw a fire and flew over to it. A few seconds later he saw the evil dragon getting ready to put all the food into the fire. So he flew as fast as he could, knocked the evil dragon out of the way and burned him to ashes. He grabbed the food to take it to the forest animals. None of these animals really liked him until they saw what was going on. Then they all had big smiles on there faces and said you can keep it. He was grateful to the animals from then on. They all lived happily ever after( friends of course).

THE END

Be sure your child’s creation or something special you made yourself is in this space next time.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue and made it so great!

Resources for Homeschoolers

Links

From Nancy Wagner:

Homeschool eStore.com, has a free unit study available each week for those on their newsletter.

This week (11/30/06) it was a unit study on the Civil War. -here-

Here is the website for the main site. -here-

To receive the weekly newsletters with the links for the free products, go up to the top, click on "my account", click on the "Continue" in the box for new customers, and then you will be at the subscribe page. I have NEVER gotten anything in the mail from them nor have I gotten junk e-mail that I could ascribe to them as a source. I feel safe at passing this along. They have some great studies, though as a general rule I don't use unit studies much. I use it as supplementary materials instead.

I got this link from another group and I have checked some of them out. Great supplemental stuff to all kinds of studies.

This is a site where people list books to give away. It does cost for postage to mail the book to the requesting person, but likewise, for books you request, the postage is paid by the sender. You get 1 point for every 10 books you list to give away. I think it takes 1 point to request a book as well. You make up a wish list so that if those books are added to someone else's inventory, you will automatically get them. One person on one of my homeschool lists got several Saxon Math books free that way. It's free to register.

Hi - This is a freebie consumer math book that you can download from the internet. It is for probably junior high and high school ages.
