This is a list of goofs I have seen on recent state maps. This list includs mis-marking of highways, lack of mileage between certain points, "leftover" mileage not deleted after the decommissioning of state routes, mileage that didn't add up between stars (and, in some cases, mileage that was counted in two different directions), and mileage that didn't break up on each side of a town. I also point out places where a smaller-text number could be added in areas, or where a red number (between starred points) could be added. The bulleted list below includes all types of errors seen on the 2006 map, and then below that is a 'checklist' of the errors fixed on the 2005 map.

A lot of these are tiny things. But I like the Iowa map, I think it's an excellent product, and I'm a perfectionist. And there are some moderately noticeable mistakes and "highway residue" from old routes on the map.

• Noticed after I sent the first e-mail to the DOT:
  • IA 175/NE 51 Missouri River bridge should be marked as toll bridge
  • IA 83: Missing mileage between Marne and IA 173
  • MN 266 was decommissioned in 2003. (Nobles County PDF)
  • MN 254's north end is I-90; line above it should be gray
  • Dubuque inset: The part of US 52/61/151 between the two junctions of the link to US 20 should be marked as expressway, not freeway, and placed under the lines marking the US 20 bridge. Also, the south junction of 52/62/151 and the link to 20 (IA 946) should be marked as a partial interchange. (Pointed out by Dennis Swanson)
  • I-29 mileage between I-680 and IA 192: When the partial-interchange mark was added at the north end of IA 192, a new "5" mileage was put on the east side of I-29, but the old "7" on the west side, visible in the clip below, wasn't removed. It should be.
  • West Des Moines: Special census put it above 50,000. Should the city name be the next larger size, or will that not officially take place until the 2010 census is added?
  • Vinton: With a population above 5000 (5102), it should have a metro area marked.
  • Chariton: With a population below 5000 (4573), it should be a smaller size. (In fact, Chariton dropped below 5000 in the 1990 census.)
  • Urban area markings: Dennis Swanson argues that there are some towns with population below 5,000 that should not have their "urban areas" marked. I see that when this happens, the town is either contiguous to a 5000-plus area (Eldridge, Hudson, Sergeant Bluff, West Burlington, Alton) or total more than 5000 when combined (Tama-Toledo) - except for one, Marquette and McGregor. I'm hesitant to call these errors - I can understand the rationale - though Dennis disagrees. Either way, the Marquette-McGregor one, at least, should have its yellow area removed.
• County seat diamonds missing: Allison, Clinton, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Dakota City NE.
• Nebraska Hwy. 38 no longer exists; markers on main map and inset should be removed. See article in Omaha World-Herald, Jan. 10, 2003. See clip from 2005 below.
• Remove mileage on L35 (Old US 275), to the right of I-29 exit 47 marker (5)
• I-29 between exits 47 and 42 - change black 6 to 5(?) (47-42) - there's a red 6 there also, which I think is for I-80 to IA 370. I don't know if this is 100% a map error, but it looks weird. See clip from 2005 below.
• Add interchange number (21) to I-680 at L34 interchange (pointed out by Jason Hancock)
• US 63, mileage in Waterloo: The "9" near Denver correctly became a "12" in 2006, but the black "3" remaining near the hospital icon north of US 218 needed to be removed as well.
• IA 7, mileage between US 71 and IA 4: Red "30" should now be "27"
• US 61 mileage: Black "15" under "Muscatine" needs to be split - changed into a "12" south of the IA 92 (old 61) junction with a "3" added to the west part of the bypass south of IA 22
• US 151 mileage: Change black "19" in southern Dubuque County to "17" and add black "2" between interchanges at Cascade
• US 34 mileage: Add one number between New London and Middletown interchanges (and remove two "4"s when old road is turned over)
• US 218 mileage: Add black "3" between US 20 and Washburn or change black "8" south of town to "11"
• IA 150 mileage: Remove black "12" and "1" between Vinton and I-380; restore red "13". See clip from 2005 below. (Or is Urbana being considered as "on" 150 given current city limits?)
• IA 281 mileage: The "14" by Dunkerton is the distance to US 63; should this be "11" for the distance from 281's west end (city limits) to Dunkerton?
• Black line for IA 146 needs to be extended north slightly from old US 30 to new interchange in Le Grand
• New US 34 in Des Moines County: I presume that the half-interchange marks at Middletown and West Burlington will be changed to full-interchange marks next year, when ramps are fully completed.
• North side of Mount Pleasant: When I look at the ramps involved at the US 34/218 interchange, I believe it would be more accurate to swap the places of the full-interchange marker and the partial-interchange one right below it because it is the east-west road (34) that has the full set of ramps. (However, given the layout of the roads on the map, I can see this might be difficult to change.)
• NEW ERROR: Text for Colwell in Floyd County has yellow outline, probably spillover from county line nearby. See also green outlines for many towns near Loess Hills (e.g. Thurman, Westfield).
• Near Ames: Restore black line for IA 930 west of R38
• South Dakota Hwy. 105: There is conflicting data on this highway. This official county map (PDF) indicates that 105 is no longer in North Sioux City at all, and is no longer south of Jefferson either. However, the official 2005 state highway map and an exit sign on I-29 still show SD 105 here. This might require a call up to South Dakota for an answer.
• Ottumwa inset: Full interchange squares at Church Street (currently marked as partial) and Vine Street
• Des Moines inset: County Line Road should connect to US 69

The only change I have made to the list below since posting it in spring 2005 is adding the asterisks, indicating which errors were fixed. Those not bold and marked "fixed" or otherwise commented were correct in 2005. Some numbers ended up slightly different than I thought they'd be.

The below list includes most of what I sent to the DOT in 2004. The list is separated into categories, with text for things that WERE changed for the 2005 map (plain text), things that were NOT changed (bold), things I didn't have on the original list (bold italic), and additional comments in italics. ((Year) indicates first map year this was an error, if known.) An asterisk indicates this error was fixed for the 2006 state map; an asterisk in parentheses indicates the error was partially fixed. Some of the things that weren't fixed in 2005 I left off the 2006 list above because they're minor or could technically not be goofs.

• MISCELLANEOUS (3 fixed, 1 sort of fixed)
  • Omaha area:
    • All of NE 38 in Omaha was decommissioned Jan. 1, 2003, so it should be removed. Signs have been taken down, including on I-480. - Not fixed (2004)
    • Remove mileage on L35 (Old US 275), to the right of I-29 exit 47 marker (5) (2004)
    • *Remove mileage at Crescent (2) (2004)
    • I-29 between exits 47 and 42 - change black 6 to 5(?) (47-42) - there's a red 6 there also, which I think is for I-80 to IA 370. The five miles would be IA 92 to IA 370.
    • Add mileage on US 275/IA 92 west of I-29 and on US 6 (if space)
    • Mileage on I-80: Distance between west juction I-29 and IA 192 is 3 miles; distance between IA 192 and east junction I-29 is 1 mile, so "2" should be a 3 or maybe 4 (because the scale is so small)
    • *Add mileage on IA 370 in Iowa (3) (just below area shown above)
  • *US 218 between Vinton and US 30 - remove black mileage (10, 3) - Now US 218 is black, but the numbers are still there (2004)
  • IA 150 between Vinton and I-380 - remove black mileage (12, 1); it might look better if red star was moved to where "1" is - Now IA 150 is black, but the numbers are still there (2004) - See 2006 note above
  • Old IA 181 is S45, not S44 - fixed
  • *Ogden: US 30/US 169 is a full four-ramp, not partial, interchange - Error since interchange was first actually placed on the map (1981)
  • Oskaloosa: Part of US 63 south of IA 92 is black when it should be red - Rendered moot by changing 63's color
  • *Fort Madison: A small piece of Old IA 103 is marked inside city limits (right circle). If this has been turned over to the city, remove and combine mileage (4, 2). (2004)
  • US 65: Not multilane divided in the Colo area (between US 30 and County Road E41) - fixed
  • *US 30 between US 69 and I-35 along the south side of Ames should be marked as freeway - Wrong since intersection was removed in 1991; section at Dayton Ave. still only marked as "multilane divided" though this is less visible since addition of interchange square. Inset is correct.
  • *US 30 in Cedar Rapids: 16th Avenue and 80th Street interchanges should both be partial interchanges, both on the main map and the inset, just like Marshalltown - pointed out by Jason Hancock; interchanges built in 1980s but not marked until 2002
  • *Ida County: Swap the positions of the red star and the "1" west of Ida Grove to clarify that the star is the west US 59/IA 175 junction and not the town (as measured in three of the four directions). To fix the fourth, the red "22" on IA 175 to the southwest should be "21". - The "1" between US 59 and Ida Grove is still being used in both directions on 175. US 59 uses the west intersection.
  • *IA 146: Is expressway (multilane divided) between Grinnell and I-80. - It's possible that the lanes aren't far enough apart to be "divided" on the map, though it is four lanes with a small median. County map shows this.
  • *US 75 around Sioux City: Main map missing interchanges at 25th Street (north of US 20) and Lakeport St/Road (with US 20)
  • *Clinton: Is 67's current bypass of downtown Camanche marked on main map? - It doesn't look like it
  • *Underwood: Connect paved G30 at I-80 interchange west to County Road G8L (Old IA 191)
  • *Brooklyn: Draw V18 between Brooklyn and US 6
  • *Old IA 955/963 south of Dubuque: The red line near the expressway is still there and not changed to gray. - And now it's black. (2004)
  • *I-80 at US 65: It looks like the interchange square is slightly left of where the roads actually intersect, looking like the county road meets I-80 instead. The square should be almost directly under the 142 exit marker. (1994)
  • US 34 at Red Oak: When I drove this route in June 2003 the road was not multilane divided, but rather a two-lane with extended third lane for eastbound traffic. - Removed
  • *IA 44: "8" between Panora and Guthrie Center should be in red
  • *US 34 at US 71: This intersection is a full four-ramp interchange. US 34 is multilane divided for a short distance in this area, from about half a mile west (across the Nodaway River) to just over a mile east. The eastern point of the four-lane is approximately where County Road H34, north of 34, has a pair of curves. - Probably around since realignment in the 1970s. Also, 34-59 isn't at-grade, but there's no way an interchange square will fit there. I can see why these are not marked.
  • Ames: IA 930 black line should not be east of Boone County line, gray instead - Now the whole thing is gray, but I don't think the section in Boone County was turned over. (1980/2005)
  • *IA 92: "8" southeast of Harvey should be moved to the west, between IA 5 and Harvey - Prior to 1997, that "8" wasn't even there, but now that it's been added, it needs moved.
  • *W64 can now be marked along Old US 218/Old IA 923 in Washington County instead of arrowed notations near the ends - Then again, maybe it doesn't fit. Not necessarily a goof. (2004)
• COMBINE MILEAGE (3 fixed)
  • *IA 2 south and west of IA 25 (2, 13) - Now entering its 22nd year, but not the oldest (1983)
  • (*)US 63 between Denver and downtown Waterloo (9, 3) - Oldest leftover on the map. Still there after IA 57 was truncated in 1980. Airline Highway, old 57, is the divider.(1981)
  • IA 148 between IA 92 and Corning (20, 4) - Fixed, and now there's a star at the 92/148 junction.
  • *IA 17 between Eagle Grove and US 20 (13, 2) (2004)
  • *IA 17 between Madrid and IA 141 (2, 7) (2004)
  • IA 127 west of Magnolia (4, 1) - Fixed!
  • *IA 92 between Oskaloosa and IA 21 (5, 11) - Fixed, but a "1" needs to be added between US 63 and IA 23 to make the red starred mileage add up (this is where that extra mile is)
  • US 34 between IA 48 and US 71 (8,6) - remnant of IA 115 (2004); mileage has fluctuated in past
  • *IA 25 between Guthrie Center and I-80, red starred mileage (11, 4) - Technically, perhaps, not a goof, but why split at a county road? (2004)
  • *I-80 between IA 25 and US 169, red starred mileage (14, 10) - Still starred at old 6. Technically not a goof. (2004)
  • US 30 between Glidden and Scranton (6, 4) - Still a goof, unless Ralston is considered to be "on" 30.
• DELETE MILEAGE (4 fixed)
  • *West of Beeds Lake symbol (8) - Remainder from IA 134 (1991)
  • *On US 67 between IA 64 and Clinton (9,7) - originally split, I think, at a town that hasn't been on the map for 30 years (Almont)
  • *South of Plano (5); the "14" west of Centerville is the total Centerville-Promise City mileage (2004)
  • *Southwest of State Center (7); the "15" southeast of State Center is the total IA 330-US 65 mileage. Or add an "8" between State Center and IA 330. (1995)
  • Southeast of Spirit Lake (1) (2000)
  • On Old IA 415, to the right of the IA 17 shield (9)
  • East of Garwin (6)
  • West of West Point (6)
  • Along Old IA 49 (8, 3, 10)
  • *Downtown Waterloo: Has two red stars (see arrows on map above) - (or is this intentional?)
• ADD (THAT IS, PLACE NEW) MILEAGE (2 done)
  • US 20 between US 65 and IA 14, both starred and between interchanges (this could result in splitting up starred mileage on IA 14, and it did). Currently, 20 has no starred mileage between US 65 and the east I-380 split. - Done and done.
  • *Conflicting mileage on IA 122
  • Mason City area: Downtown still has a red star. I would delete it, change the red "9" on US 65 north of Mason City to black and add a red "12", add a black "3" between IA 122 and US 18, and pick one number to be black on IA 122. (That 9 and 8 are for the same stretch of road.) - The star itself isn't a goof, but the 9 and 8 on the same road is.
  • *Sioux City: On US 20/US 75 southern and eastern freeways, and perhaps Business US 75 too.
  • *Cedar Rapids: US 30 between US 151 and I-380 (?)
  • *US 218: Around the Mount Pleasant bypass
  • *Des Moines: IA 5 and US 65 between I-35 and IA 163
  • IA 163: 3 or 4 miles between the two Monroe interchanges - It's 4
  • *US 61: 2 or 3 between IA 64 and south Maquoketa interchange
  • *US 61: Black mileage between Fort Madison and Burlington, split at IA 16 (8-8) - Probably removed because at one point that part of 16 was going to be killed in 2003 (2004)
  • US 61: Between IA 22 and north junction of IA 92 - A "4" was added between IA 22 and IA 38. (1986)
  • *Clinton: Small black numbers between south junction US 30/67 and north junction (2), and between that intersection and US 67/IA 136 (2)
  • Dickinson County: Along IA 86 between IA 9 and US 71; US 71 between IA 86 and Okoboji (split at Arnolds Park) - It's quite possible that the numbers simply don't fit.
  • *US 65 between IA 57 and US 20: Change 6 and 5 to black, remove red star at Iowa Falls, add red "11" - Technically not a goof, but it might help. (2004)
  • *I-380: Red "22" between US 20 and IA 150; red "27" between IA 150 and US 30; black "3" between exits 65 and 62 - I-380 still has no starred mileage. Technically not a goof
  • US 151: Could add a red "23" between US 6 and Cedar Rapids - operative word being "could".
  • *IA 12: Could add a red "13" between Hawarden and Akron and red "28" between Akron and Sioux City
  • *Along IA 934 in Waterloo (in small type) - but everywhere else in Waterloo does have mileage, and the interchanges are now marked; not really a goof
  • *Along IA 100 in Cedar Rapids (in small type, if possible)
  • *IA 122: Small black "4" between US 65 and the east end
  • *US 63: Black "17" between Bloomfield and Ottumwa
• CHANGE MILEAGE (3 done)
  • *Summary of changes needed for Oskaloosa area/Mahaska County (also noted elsewhere): Add black "1" in town between US 63 and IA 23. Change red "22" by 92 shield west of Beacon to "23" (2+8+13). Change red "28" southeast of Eddyville to "30". Change red "29" by Cedar to "32". Change red "24" on IA 137 to "26".
  • Parkersburg: As currently starred on IA 57, to the west, 8+6+4+5=23=red star is at WEST junction of 57/14, but to the east, 8+10=18=red star is at EAST junction. On IA 14 (2005 map), 7+2=9=red star is at WEST junction. - Now that 14's mileage has been changed, its numbers further the confusion. I'd keep the star at the EAST junction since that's what it looks like and:
    -- Change red "23" on IA 57 by Ackley to "25"
    -- Add red "14" on IA 14 south of Allison, change red "9" south of Parkersburg to 7, remove black 7
    -- *OR, if star considered to be at WEST junction, change red "18" near New Hartford to "20" and make "12" south of Allison red
  • *IA 3 west of Cherokee
  • *IA 3: The mileage between IA 143 and US 59 should be 4-4-5 instead of 5-5-3. The "3" between Meriden and US 59 is actually a longer distance than the "5" between Cleghorn and Meriden. - Still a goof, still not fixed. Actually marked as 4-5-4 until 1977, and then 4-5-3 until 1983. The distance between 143 and L40 is exactly 4 miles, though to downtown Cleghorn is a half-mile more. Regardless, the distance between Meriden and US 59 is the longest of the three, and 4-4-5 would be a more accurate representation.
  • *De Witt area: Black "6" between Grand Mound and US 61 should be "4". Red "32" by Calamus should be "30". "4" near Welton should be distance between Welton and US 30.
  • Marshalltown: Make "5" on IA 14 north of town an "8" (since the city-center marking isn't on 14 itself) *or, alternately, add small black "3" between downtown and US 30 - The 8 miles between IA 330 and US 30 is still marked as "5" (1991) though the red "24" by Conrad is right.
  • *IA 141: Change "6" by Sloan to "7" or add "1" between I-29 and Sloan. I assume the case of 6+9=16 between I-29 and Smithland has to do with the removal of US 75 through Sloan.
  • *IA 24: There are currently two stars at New Hampton, about one mile apart. Remove the star in the town (keep the one at the interchange) and change the red "26" northeast of Lawler to a "27" (with a black "1" added between the interchange and New Hampton, if possible).
  • *I-235: "14" west of state capitol marker should be distance between west end and US 69
  • *IA 5: Change "5" near Pleasantville to distance between IA 316 and IA 92 (7?) (2005)
  • IA 415: Change "8" along route to current mileage between IA 141 and IA 160 - well, I guess adding the mileage between IA 141 and Polk City works too.
  • IA 163: Change "7" at Polk/Jasper county line to the distance between US 65 and Prairie City - and all the mileage adds up, too.
  • *US 275: Change "1" near state line at Hamburg to "2" (2004)
  • *US 59: Change "9" south of IA 2 to "11" - distance between IA 2 and state line (2004)
  • IA 163: Between Monroe and Oskaloosa, 6+7+3+2+14+2 (the last 2 was, in 2004, unmarked on IA 92 between IA 163 and US 63 in downtown Oskaloosa) does not equal the red 30. - Red star was moved to 163-92 interchange, so 30 is now right. Mileage on 63 (and 146!) changed to match, but others are off. See above.
  • 
  • *I-80 in Davenport: Change red "12" by I-80/US 61 to "6"; stray red star on I-80 near County Road Z30 doesn't make any sense, so I suggest removing it, changing the red "5" to black, and adding a red "11" between US 61 and US 67. - The red "12" is a goof, if the red star at 80/61 applies to I-80. The rest technically isn't a goof, but still weird
  • IA 175 between I-29 and Mapleton: Delete red star at Onawa, change red "2" to black, change red "21" southwest of Mapleton to "23" - Technically not a goof since the numbers add up, but a remnant from US 75.
  • US 30 between I-29 and Logan: Missouri Valley doesn't seem like the place for a red star anymore. I would move the red star to I-29, change red mileages on 30 near Missouri Valley and Blair NE both to "13", and add/adjust red mileage on I-29 accordingly (IA 175-US 30 becomes 37, US 30-I-680 becomes a red 3 or 4 instead of the black 3). - Technically not a goof. Might be more trouble than it's worth.
• SPLIT MILEAGE (2 done)
  • IA 141: Split "6" north and south of new IA 415 interchange (into 2 and 4) - done
  • Along US 71/IA 175 through Lake View; "10" should be split into 5 west of Lake View, 5 east of Lake View - done
  • *US 20 between IA 150 and IA 187; "12" should be split at Winthrop interchange (6-6 or 7-5) - This was split before IA 282 was decommissioned (2004), though the 7-5 may have been based on old 20
  • *US 75 between Hinton and US 20; split "10" as necessary between Hinton and US 20
  • *IA 14 between Charles City and Greene; "18" should be split at interchange with US 218 (2-16) - originally a "7" between 218 and 147, which should have become 2-5 in 2001
  • (*)US 52 between Durango and US 61: Redo numbers between Durango-Sageville-IA 32-US 61 - there are two numbers here, 6 and 3, where there should be three, maybe 4-2-3 or 4-1-4
  • *IA 17: Black mileage between US 18 and IA 3, split at Renwick (18 north, 7 south) - Downtown Renwick is off 17, which may be the reason, but it's close
  • *IA 2 between Clarinda and Bedford; split "17" east and west of New Market
  • *US 6 between IA 224 and Grinnell; split "10" at Oakland Acres
  • US 59 between US 18 and IA 9; restore split at Allendorf (17 becomes 2-15) (2004)
  • US 63 between IA 92 and Eddyville; split "10" north and south of IA 163 - Original problem fixed and fixed well, but see Oskaloosa note above
• MARK NEW COUNTY ROADS (2 done) (technically not goofs)
  Old IA 102 (G5T), Old IA 49 (various), Old IA 107 north of Thornton (S25), Old IA 142 (S70, *J18), Old IA 339 (L14), Old IA 415 northwest of Polk City (R2F, like before 1980?), *Old IA 99 (Co. 99, like Co. 105)
• INSETS (4 fixed, 7 with mitigating circumstances)
  • Omaha/Council Bluffs: Remove NE 38 shield and adjust multilane marking accordingly - Still there, and most of it is now red
  • *O/CB: Street used by NE 64 is Cuming, not Cumming (one M)
  • *O/CB: G37 line is thicker than it should be
  • O/CB: Add US 275 shield to I-29 at south end - done
  • Des Moines: County road on east side is F70, not E70 - at least, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be. Polk County doesn't put up blue pentagons.
  • DM: Add more street names in some places, especially Ankeny - suggested by Jason Hancock
  • Cedar Rapids: Stony Point Road, not "Stoney" - I was wrong on this. "Stoney" is correct.
  • *Cedar Rapids: 16th Avenue and 80th Street interchanges on US 30 should both be partial interchanges, both on the main map and the inset, just like Marshalltown - pointed out by Jason Hancock
  • *Ames: County road at northeast corner is R63, not R36
  • Burlington: Remove, or at least make black and smaller, multilane mark east of partial interchange in West Burlington (I see that this will become a full interchange when construction is complete). - fixed
  • *Davenport: For consistency, remove "Ill." suffix on "To Galena" in the northeast corner.
  • Iowa City: Remove multilane mark on Old IA 965 at I-80 (or maybe not); *add a "To Davenport" (or West Liberty) on US 6 at right side of inset
  • IC: Space for a "To Mount Vernon" on IA 1 at north side? - suggested by Jason Hancock
  • *Sioux City: Change thicker black line for Old IA 377 (just east of airport, on Sioux City/Sergeant Bluff border) to regular street
  • *SC: Move "To Fort Dodge" to edge of map
  • *SC: "Le Mars" two words at northeast corner
  • SC: Remove, or change to black, short multilane marking north of I-29 exit 148 - done
  • *Waterloo/Cedar Falls: "V14" north of Cedar Falls is not in a box
  • *W/CF: add interchange number (66) at V49 (Old IA 297)
  • W/CF: "Greenhill Road" (one word, not "Greenhills") mark should be moved to the right onto the road that has an interchange with US 218 - done
  • *W/CF: "Cedar Heights" is two words
  • *W/CF: If possible, move interchange square for Exit 72 south slightly to intersection of San Marnan Drive and I-380
  • W/CF: Thicker line for IA 21 could be extended slightly north to San Marnan Drive - unless it's not actually part of IA 21. I'm unclear on this.
  • W/CF: Also, it would look better for continuity purposes if the small piece of US 63 south of Dunkerton Road (C66) was also marked as multilane - this change would need to be done to the main map as well. While not precisely accurate (the four lanes are not divided), it might look better than conveying the idea that 63 suddenly narrows to two lanes for that short distance.
