This is our most sacred day of remembrance and is intended to be a time when all Australians can gather to honour those who have served in times of war and conflict, and most particularly the more than 102,000 Australians who have paid the ultimate price for that service. Our highest duty should be to ensure that the Anzac tradition is passed on to young people. It saddens me to think that an education institution should seek to prevent young people from taking part in Anzac Day commemorations, when it would seem relatively simple to move the exams. Other businesses such as shopping centres remain closed on 25 April until 1pm, when the traditional Anzac Day services have ended. I would hope at the very least that Bond University could do the same. The trading of businesses on Anzac Day is governed by State legislation and I will be writing urgently to the Queensland Premier, Mr Beattie, seeking his support on this matter.
