Continuing The Tradition
(Part 2 of 2)

OHH BOY! If ya read my first commentary about Meech
Wells, Battlecat and Mel-Man you'll understand why I'm
doin another. I'M NOT DONE, there are still some more
tight producers to talk about, Jelly Roll, Fredwreck,
Scott Storch & Blaqthoven. I chose these guys cause
I think we'll be hearin their sounds more and more in
future west coast music. You may know these cats, you
may not...but I wanna discuss these hot beat junkies
for those who aint knowin!
Startin off, Jelly Roll was the man who hooked Coniyac
and Kola up with Snoop to form Doggy's Angels. Yeah,
the first time I remember hearing a Jelly Roll beat
was on Snoop's "Topp Dogg" album. He had that one cut,
"Party Wit A D.P.G" on there...pretty descent if ya
ask me. Snoop liked his shit and would use him as a
regular producer for his Doggystyle projects. "Tha Eastsidaz"
was the next album where you heard the production of
him, it was the laid back song, "Another Day", followed
by one track on "Pleezbaleevit!". There, he produced
one of my favorites, "Cold Crush Gangsta". You've might
of overlooked Jelly Roll's production, but on "The Last
Meal", he had 3 of his tracks put on the album that
you couldn't really miss. "Wrong Idea", "Bring It On"
and "I Can't Swim", some tight ones fo sure. Right then,
Jelly Roll got my respect for his talents, I really
digged "Wrong Idea". I'm sure Jelly Roll will be heard
on future Doggystyle albums since he was featured on
the last 3. In the future, I know he'll be involved
with Bad Azz's album, "Personal Business" which is set
to hit March 27th.
Next up is Fredrick Nassar a.k.a Fredwreck, who got
his start in the rap biz as a Dj at a Bay Area radio
station in California, KMEL. He would get to be recognized
in Cali and eventually would produce material for Bobby
Brown, King T, Jodeci & um...Everlast (lol). It
wasn't intil lately that his talent for makin dope west
coast beats was noticed by big names like Kurupt and
Bigg Snoop Dogg. "Streetz iz a Mutha" is were Fredwreck
began to do some serious damage, "Who Ride Wit Us",
"Represent Dat G.C" and "Callin Out Names" were tracks
he laced for Kurupt's album. His production style is
very reminiscent of the early 90's bouncy funk which
the West is known for. In the summer of 2000, Fredwreck
would tag along for Dr. Dre's "Up In Smoke" tour, were
he ran a couple shows behind the turn tables for them.
His work has recently been heard on "Pleezbaleevit!",
where he produced the first Doggy's Angels single, "Ridaz
Wit Me", and 3 other bangin songs to his name. These
days, Fredwreck is known through out Cali, were his
fresh beats are being bumped constantly. He is gaining
more and more respect as his music is heard. This mutherfucka
is tight, many of you know that, maybe cause he keeps
his beats sounding very funky, and each a lil different
from the last. Fredwreck will return alongside Kurupt
for his forthcoming album, "Space Boogie", were he's
rumored to be handling the majority of the production.
Keep ya eyes peeled for that record sometime in the
spring. Also, Fredwreck will be working with rapper
Knoc-turn'al, off L.A. Confidential Records producing
tracks for his album, "Knoc's Landin".
This next keyboardist turned producer isn't a native
to California, but fuck it, Scott Storch is DOPE. Admit
it, I know all of you are bumpin his beats whether you
know it or not. So here's some background...Scott Storch
who hails from Philadelphia has laid down live music
for The Roots, a rap band from Philly which he has toured
a lot with in the past. Then around the time Dr. Dre
was working with Eve some few years back, Storch met
up with the Doctor. Dre became interested and wanted
to see what he was all about, so Storch played down
acouple notes for a future song, "Big Egos". From there,
Dre would use Scott Storch's keyboarding talents on
most of his "2001" album. It was not intil very recently
that Storch would begin to produce. On "Restless" Scott
Storch along with Dre and Mel-Man would come together
to produce the first single, "X", which became a favorite
rather quickly. With some recognition there, "The Last
Meal" would be home to 3 of his own beats. Yeah..."Brake
Fluid", "Ready 2 Ride", and the notorious, "Y'all Gone
Miss Me", peeps were finally like, "Scott who?". I know
this guy is quickly getting higher and higher on my
list each day with beats that are some dope west coast
funk. He's starting to come into his own as a producer
and I'll bet we'll hear from him again. I don't know
when or where we'll see more of his production, but
I know we will.
Finally is a producer who has been layin low as an underground
artist for tha West. He's called Blaqthoven, a producer
who is made his rounds with tha D.P.G and the Death
Row camp as of late. I don't have too much info on this
mysterious producer, but he's good enough to be mentioned
here. Blaqthoven's beats first surfaced onto the mainstream
with the album, "Tha Streetz iz a Mutha", were he co-produced
4 tracks with his mentor, Daz Dillinger. Not bad at
all, Blaqthoven would even produce the intense track,
"Nigga 4 life" for Snoop's "Tha Eastsidaz" album. In
late 2000, a Blaqthoven produced cut, "Too Gangsta"
appeared on the Death Row album, "Too Gangsta For Radio".
So far that's all Blaqthoven has produced that I know
of. But, he will be involved in Bad Azz's album, "Personal
Business", Short Khop's debut, "Da Khop Shop", and doin
shit on Playa Hamm's new album, "Layin Hands", so be
on tha look out for all of that real soon!
HELL YEAH...hope you people liked this article, I put
it together for you guys, so send me feedback. In my
opinion these are some hot producers right now, who
all can set fire to your cd players. Some are hotter
than others, but I'm really feelin Fredwreck's production,
same wit Scott Storch. Jelly Roll and Blaqthoven are
both nice, but the other two I think are better. What
do you guys think of em? Hit up the affiliates board
and post ya opinions! -Incognito
