"5 Mic Fuckups"

Written By:  Incognito on 12/30/01

Amidst the battle of Nas and Jay-Z, we've seen the best brought out in both MC's in the recent months.  We have just recently seen them drop their best albums in years according to most heads, and this was inpart fueled because of a strong rivalry that has revived each of them as MC's.  The Source recently crowned both albums, "The Blueprint" and "Stillmatic" as 5 mic-ers; classic ratings.  Much debate has risen due to The Source neglecting past albums that haven't received their 5 mic respect after seeing the Jay-Z album getting the praise he doesn't deserve with "The Blueprint."
How can you put "The Blueprint" above hip-hop must-haves such as, "The Chronic" and "Enter The Wu: 36 Chambers"?  Both are not considered classics by The Source.  Ask around, these two LP's along with many more are classic records like "Cuban Linx" and "Dr. Dre 2001" are certainly classics in the hip-hop catalogue, and are much more superior then "The Blueprint."  How could you overlook "The Chonic"?  The album that shifted the focus to the Left coast, revitalizing hip-hop, bringing in a missing vibe to the rap game and serving it like some crack-cocaine all across the world like it was no thang.  This album had much more impact on us than "The Blueprint."  "The Chronic" was an explicit narration brought to you by the people who eye-witnessed it first hand; Snoop Dogg, RBX, Kurupt, Daz and Dr. Dre.  The album hit harder than the 10 o'clock news - yet it received 4.5 mics.  What did they miss?  The production was something so complex and innovative along with those traumatizing lyrics that made you want to cover your ears when you first heard them.  "H To The Izzo" is nothing when it stands up against "Nuthing But A 'G' Thang" or "lil Ghetto Boy."  That song is just another commerical-pop track to give listeners what they want.  It has no importance, we know Jay-Z's name already.  "Doggystyle" is another album that only recieved 4 mics, and it is definetly a classic by all means.  Can't overlook "The Slim Shady LP"...this album was something else, and should have been given 5 mic status.  The lyrics and rhymes Eminem brought to the table were incredible, still I think they were afraid to give the rating because he was a white boy.
The Source also gave the Made Men album 4 mics, seeing it was only fittingly since the owner was apart of that group, Benzino.
I think The Source make a boo boo with their decision to rate "The Blueprint" a 5 mic classic.  Because now, they see that "Stillmatic" is a better album than Jay-Z's, and they have to give it 5 mics or else nothing would make sense.  "The Blueprint" should not have been garned 5 mics, and "Stillmatic" should have.  This is my main point, because I think The Source messed up here, while ignoring past albums by not giving credit where credit is due.
But the ultimate test is the test of time, which some albums that may be classic at first die out and become dated, like in my opinion, "Straigh Outta Compton."  Listening to it now, it is surely a classic, but you can't hesitate to say that the production and rhymes schemes that are on the album wear out after some time.  So far, this hasn't happend to albums like, "The Chronic" which is almost 10 years old.
I could go on with other albums that I named above, but I would be repeating myself.  There is a long list of albums that many people agree that are classics.  "Doggystyle," "36 Chambers," "Cuban Linx," "Ready To Die" and "Dr. Dre 2001" are some titles that never were recognized for their greatness. - Incognito
