OTHER LOCAL EVENTS-----

Equestrian Camp Mitchell County Conservation Board is opening a portion of their property to equestrian camping this summer. It is located near the trailhead for the Cedar River Trail that winds along the river to Mitchell, Iowa. Enjoy a nice meal at the Mitchell Dam Bar (hitching post provided) and ride back home. The camping is primitive this year. There is water and a unisex bathroom. Future plans for the site include adding hitching posts and electric. There are picnic tables, fire rings, and a self-registration system at $8.00 per night.

Other equestrian trails to explore in the area are Lime Creek Nature Center, Highway 65 just north of Mason City. It features mostly flat along with some wooded trails winding through an old quarry site. Pilot Knob, on Highway 9 just 10 miles west of I-35, has wooded hilly trails. Pilot Knob is the second highest elevation in Iowa and is a nice half-day ride. Idlewild Wildlife Reserve is 15 miles southeast of Osage just off Highway 218 near Floyd and offers excellent riding. The Shell Rock Greenbelt by Nora Springs features about 15 miles of riding along or near the river. None of these riding spots allow overnight camping, but the Osage Campground is a central location. It is also good for an overnight stay for those on their way to Forestville or Zumbro Bottoms in Minnesota or the Badlands/Black Hills (8-10 hours) or even Wyoming (16 hours). Osage is 30 miles from I-35 and 10 miles from the Avenue of the Saints.

REAP Meeting

To the Cedar River Saddle Club and the Mitchell County Outlaw 4-H Club: Tuesday, August 1, Mitchell County Resource Enhancement And Protection (REAP) held a meeting at the Nature Center regarding funds to develop Cedar Bridge Park Camp Grounds. Four members from the Saddle Club attended the meeting regarding this camp to be an Equestrians Camp Grounds, as there is a need for one in this area. This camp ground is across the road from the Nature Center along the river. It would be a perfect place to camp or just park your trailer so you could ride the trail along the river to Mitchell. There is a trail from this camp going under the bridge to get on the trail to Mitchell. Thursday, August 3, Lavonne Guenther, VP of the Saddle Club, wrote to Milt Owen of the Mitchell County Conservation Board, which she e-mail him prior the Mitchell County Conservation on August 7. She expressed the sincere support of the Club for the Cedar Bridge Park and that the Club would like to help in any way to make this project possible. That Equestrians are always looking for places to camp with friends and family riding their horses. She stated how the state and local community would benefit from out of state and out of town visitors. Tuesday, August 7, Mike Wertz, President and Marj Stonecypher, Sec/Treas of the Club, attended the Mitchell County Conservation Board meeting at the Nature Center. It was brought up that the Club thought the park was to be an Equestrian Park and somehow plans show more spaces for RV Campers than Equestrian Campers. After much discussion regarding this matter, the board voted that all campsites would be available for Equestrian. The designated spaces for RV Campers would still be open for them, if not occupied by the equestrians. It would be first come for those spaces. Milt asked for a letter regarding the Clubs concerns. He did not receive the e-mail from Lavonne. A copy of the letter was mailed to Milt August 8, 2006.
