Africam

Wow! What can I say about Africam and not take up a year of your time? It all started when my Mother told me about the site. We all laughed at her for sitting in front of the computer waiting for animals to walk by. Little did I know what Africam had in store for me. Watching the cams and taking pictures to submit for the picture of the day contests is such a small part of it. But I can tell you when you do win a picture of the day it is quite an exhilarating feeling. It takes awhile to come down from your cloud. A friend of mine won picture of the year this year and along with it a trip to Africa. She will be traveling to some of the reserves where the cams are located and may even get to hold the camera on the virtual game drive!! Her picture of the dreamy eyed leopard is below. Way to go Carol!! When the Rangers take out their land rover with their camera you can sit in your living room and watch in real time what they see. And they see a lot!! From dung bettles to Elephants. Sometime there is a Ranger on the Boma so you can ask questions and they will answer them. How is that for service with a smile. They also have fixed camera's at different game reserves in South Africa. Some are permanent and situated at water holes. Some are mobile and our wonderful Odie, keeps moving them to new sites so you never know what surprise is in store for you next. So if at first the camera's don't get you hooked there is the Boma.

The Boma is a message board where cammers go and talk to one another. They also have a chat room at Africam. But some people don't feel comfortable using it because chat is fast. I use both Chat and Boma. The people that come on the Boma are some of the most warm and wonderful people I have ever met. You get to meet people from all over the world. We talk about the animals and what are on the cams, but we also have a really great time. Hosting cyber parties, sharing food, celebrating birthdays and sometimes just getting really silly. Anyone new is always welcomed with warmth and invited to join in. I know because I was new once myself. If someone has a question about Africam all they have to do is ask and it usually answered quickly. If someone there knows the answer. Some of my new very best friends I met through Boma. And e-mails flow back and forth freely. I even have telephone contact with at least two of them. Recently we celebrated the birth of a grandson and someone who got their first picture of the day. We also suffered with the news that one of our friends home had suffered damage in a fire. We also keep up on one anothers kids, husbands and latest sniffles. What a wonderful bunch of people.

The staff at Africam is so attentive. They really care about the viewer. They post on the Boma any changes in the cams or even the weather there. Which at this time is horrible. They are going through some of the worst flooding in years. If you e-mail them with a question or a concern they are there. As everyone on the Boma knows, I am waiting to get a frontal view of a Hippo on dry land. I have seen many submurged in the water and am getting to be quite the expert on their ears, eyes and nostrils. Recently Pippa of Africam sent me a great photo of a Hippo to satisfy me until I see my Hippo. What a great lady she is. There are so many more on the staff I would love to mention but seeing how it is large I will just say that everyone there deserves the very best for all the work they do to ensure the site is wonderful and stays family friendly. There are many places to explore on the Africam site. to many to mention here. So go there and see for yourself. But beware. It is very addicting!!!!
