December 2004

Leif's six, and convinced deeply by the magic of Christmas and the winter holidays. Seing Santa's helper at the mall was a HUGE deal, visiting the Santa House nearby was really cool, writing a letter to Santa took hours, reading about Santa was a huge deal. Everything was magic. He decided for about three days that he wanted to be Jewish so he could celebrate Hannukah, then danced around in celebration of Solstice, enjoying the magic everywhere this time of year.

In October, we had the following conversation:

Leif: Mum, did you know it's fall?

Me: Yeah, hon. I did.

L: I didn't. (long pause) Mum, how did you know it's fall?

M: Because the calendar says "October" and because it's now cool enough we can have the windows open.

L: Oh. (really, really long pause) I think we need to move back to Iowa.

M: Really? I thought you loved Phoenix.

L: I do, but how will we know when it's Christmas?

M: (carefully weighted pause while pondering the best answer) We'll wait for Zoo Lights. When Zoo Lights starts, then we'll know it's time to get out the Advent calendar.

L: Oh, okay!
