Chapter FortyMegan awoke to the ringing of her cell phone. She blinked and fumbled to get out of the bedsheets. “Hello?” she asked breathlessly, finally finding her phone in the pocket of her jeans. “Um, Megan, it’s me,” came a soft voice. It was the voice that only moments before had been calling out to her in her dreams. Her heart instantly quickened its pace, and she sat down on the edge of the bed. “Kevin, what are you...” “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have called. You were sleeping.” “Well, yeah, I was but, is everything okay? Did something happen?” “Oh no, nothing like that.” He laughed nervously. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” Megan smiled and slipped back under the covers, cradling the phone close to her ear. “I’m fine, thanks.” “When’s the funeral?” “Day after tomorrow.” “Are you sure you don’t want us to come?” “I’m sure. You can’t miss shows just because of me.” “Megan, you’re a part of the family. I...I mean, we care about you.” “That’s nice to know, but really, Kevin, I’ll be okay. Dana’s coming tomorrow morning, she’ll be with me.” Kevin exhaled just loudly enough for Megan to hear. “How is she?” “She’s good,” Megan said, nodding. “I think she misses you, but otherwise she’s good. Only damage done was to your mailbox, no biggie.” “What?!” Megan giggled. “I’m kidding. She hasn’t gone crazy.” Kevin chuckled a little. “Good to hear.” Megan shifted into a more comfortable position. “How’s AJ?” Almost instantly, she could feel tension travel through the line. “He’s fine,” Kevin said. “Just fine.” A few seconds of silence later, Kevin cleared his throat and said, “Well, it’s late. I should let you go back to sleep.” “Oh. Okay, sure. I’ll say hi to Dana for you.” “Thanks. Good night, Megan.” “’Night.” Megan clicked the phone off and set it on the nightstand. Then she pulled the blankets up over her and stared into the darkness, wondering if Kevin missed her as much as she missed him. |
