Afghans for Angels - Headquarters

Homemade blankets for grieving families.

In memory of a special little boy...

Forever in our heart

"Afghans for Angels" is an organization made up completely of volunteers who make and deliver baby blankets to local hospitals to give to parents who have suffered the loss of their infant through miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death.

The death of a child, whether by miscarriage or later on, is a totally devastating event in a parent's life. While this is sometimes a very difficult subject to speak of, it does happen nonetheless. Through consultations with such groups as "The Pregnancy and Infant Loss Center" and a local chapter of "The Compassionate Friends", we have learned that caring and supportive servies are of great importance during this time.

Our "Afghans for Angels" are placed lovingly around these infant angels when they are held by their families for the brief time in which bittersweet hellos and sad good-byes are said. The parents are then allowed to keep these afghans as a token of remembrance of their baby. Just having something soft to hold is often comforting.

Through our sources, we have learned that these grieving parents are quite touched by the fact that people they have never met cared enough to make something so beautiful and special for them and their child. It is our belief that ANYTHING that can be done to help these families, SHOULD be done.

In 1996, a precious, beautiful little boy was born. Only he had already gone to become an angel, and we would never be allowed to see his eyes open. It was a very sad day. This lovely little baby was wrapped in a blanket, to be held and loved by his family for the short, but precious time during which bittersweet hellos and sad goodbyes had to be said. Then, there was nothing left to hold but the blanket he had been wrapped in.

This was his blanket. It was one of only a few tangible remembrances of a precious armful of love. But this blanket was a simple receiving blanket which had held countless little babies before him. It was washed and worn, and nothing special in its own right. How much more special it would have been if he could have been cradled in his own, handmade, special blanket that had been used only by him.

Thus, the idea for the "Afghans for Angels" project was created.

"Afghans for Angels" is always looking for more volunteers to help create these blanket gifts. If you can knit, crochet, quilt, or creatively decorate purchased blankets, we would LOVE to have your help!

The headquarters of "Afghans for Angels" is located in the state of Iowa. If you happen to live in this state and would like to help this project, please send an email to the address below for details.

There are already quite a few chapters up and running in many areas of the country. You can check out web pages for other chapters here. Perhaps you will find a chapter already near you that you could help out.

If you live in another area, and would like to start your own group of willing volunteers, that would be just wonderful. We will be more than happy to help you start taking care of hospitals and their families in your area. If you would like this information, please click on this link: Information on starting a new chapter. It will give you hints on how to get started and the address to write to for sample cards and brochures.

Most of all, we need your help to get the word out! The more volunteers we have; the more hospitals (and families) can benefit from our services. Please help us to help others.

Here are a few suggestions in making "angel afghans"...

Please make all blankets in baby colors. Some of the ones that work the best are: pastel blue, pink, mint green, white, or varigated baby colors.

The average size of an "angel afghan" is about 2 foot square. But blankets are needed in every size from the tiny, preemie-sized 12 X 12 inch size all the way up to full size baby blankets.

Any extra special touches are welcome. This is what will make each "angel afghan" so unique and special.

for helping us to make just a tiny difference at a very sad time for these families. Just the knowledge that someone cared enough to create a special blanket for their precious child is certain to provide a measure of comfort to these parents. May God bless you for your caring and sharing.
