German Submarines

Welcome to the German Unterseeboots section. Due to the massive numbers of U-Boats (as you can see), this section will be under construction for a LONG time. In addition, information on U-Boats of the nature I am looking for is scarce, unless you live in Germany, which I do not have the fortune of. Yes, there is one site out which has all the victories, all the tonnages, and all the information on what boat sunk what enemy vessel, when, why, where, and how. However, this man is the only one who has compiled such information (to date), and placed it online. To simply copy off that information is a bad thing to do to a man who has spent so much time in compiling this information. Henceforth...my records will only use the information he has provided in "The Conning Tower" as a confirmation of information already found. If I can find it someplace else, I will use it...if I cannot, then scratch it. I do recommend you visit his site, U-Boat.Net, as he has an excellent site, and he DOES have all the victories of U-Boats and other information. His U-Boat pages are going to be one of the bases of my research, but I will be finding other sources to back them up. The bibliography will be compiled eventually, and thrown in, but bibliography on 1400 boats is going to be rather lengthy, so bear with me if it takes a bit of time. I'll try to add to this page fairly standardly, but some of the easy ones might be the first to get out of the way.

In addition, at the risk of giving a false impression of the U-Boat career, I would like to state one fact: Most U-Boats were NOT captured. U505 was done first based on the relative ease of research, the availability and completeness of data available, and the interest I had in it towards the beginning of this project. There were, to my knowledge, only 3 U-Boats captured: U505, U110, and U234. No...U571 was not one of them.
