Sailorsaturn is the enigma of the galaxy. She shows up the last of all the Senshi, and goes through several disturbing changes in the anime and manga.
My brief knowledge of Sailorsaturn is through the anime only, so you will have to excuse me if I do not do this unique individual justice in my character essay.
Sailorsaturn does not appear as a Senshi until late in Sailormoon S. First we meet this charming young girl who happens upon Chibiusa in the park. Small Lady gets injured, and the young woman wearing dark clothing, who introduces herself as Tomoe Hotaru (Firefly of the earth), says she can help her. Hotaru then covers the injured area with her hand ... which then glows a soothing light. Chibiusa is happy and in awe of her new friend's talent.
Hotaru is surprized that Chibiusa did not wince in disgust at her power. Everyone at her school does, so Hotaru is alone most of the time. She lives in a large house with her professor father, who is often busy. Pleased to make a new friend, Hotaru invited Chibiusa and her guardian (Usagi) decides to come along for the visit.
Life is Hotaru's home isn't as pretty as it seems. A weak young child, Hotaru is alive only by the pact her father made with Phantom 90 to resurrect her after an explosion in Professor Tomoe's lab kills everyone but him. Tomoe is now in a sense possessed by the main demon of the Death Busters, making Daemons who look for Pure Crystal Hearts to find the three Tailsmen, which will allow the messiah to control the world.
If this is hard to deal with, an evil force exists in Hotaru wating for the moment to awaken. During the time that her father is working for the Death Busters, he allows his daughter to become possessed by another demon. Mistress 9 is fed by the energy from other humans. This mistress of darkness (who is 100 times worse than the Black Lady that Chibiusa turned into in Sailormoon R) fully takes control of Hotaru's body when she makes her swallow Chibiusa's Pure Crystal Heart.
What follows is one of the most dramatic battle of power, will and lives in Sailormoon. Hotaru is not fully dead. With the power of her inner self as Sailorsaturn and the efforts of her friends in the Sailor Senshi, Sailorsaturn is able to take control of Mistress 9 and destroy her. But some semblance of her remains, and Saturn has to be destroyed or she with eradicate everything.
Sailorsaturn as she is known in this time is destroyed, but is reborn as her former self as a baby. She is then returned to her father, who is back to normal. Baby Hotaru lives a pleasant life as babies do, until an new war begins in Sailor Stars. Sailorpluto then goes to collect baby Hotaru to be raised by her, Haruka and Michiru. Too soon her powers begin to emerge. What takes an average child years to develop Hotaru does in weeks. She is then able to take her full role as Sailorsaturn.
Sailorsaturn is literally the most powerful Senshi in the solar system. Her powers revolve around death and rebirth. Her defence, the Silence Wall, makes a shield of energy to protect from oncoming attacks. She carries with her her Silence Glaive, which when she says Death Ribbon Revolution, and it hits the ground, the world will be completely destroyed ... with her along with it.
