The first if the Inner Senshi to be revealed to Sailormoon, Sailormercury has several unique talents and attributes that sets her apart from the other Senshi.
Many see her as the weakest of the Senshi, whose powers don't seem to infiltrate or do much damage to the enemy. Well, I don't believe she was meant to do that. Sailorjupiter and Sailormars can pack in the punches. Sailormoon can destroy as well as heal. But Sailormercury is different: she can calculate, investigate and distract.
Among the items Sailormercury carries with her is her Microcomputer. With this she can analyze data. In one example, in the beginning of Sailor Stars when the Senshi were fighting their second battle with Nehelenia, Salormercury and Sailoruranus were trapped in another dimension together. An illusion of Nehelenia appeared. Sailoruranus tried to injure the apparition, but to no avail. Sailormercury twisted her right earring, looked through the visor and started to compute the situation, all while being the recipient of one of Nehelenia's energy attacks. Sailoruranus stood in front of Mercury to take the brunt of the energy stream, to give her a few more seconds to calculate.
Success! Sailormercury found the weakness, told Sailoruranus to aim high in her attack, and the illusion was shattered. Before they were captured by the real Nehelenia by her mirror traps, Uranus exclaimed on Mercury's cleverness and inquired what set off her doubts of the situation. Sailormercury replied that she noticed that Nehelenia's hair wasn't flowing like the wind was constantly blowing it.
Sailormercury also stands as a support Senshi. She volleys her attacks so another Senshi can go in for the kill. This was especially effective in the first season of Sailormoon, where it seemed the only attack she had was her Sabon Spray. However, as time went on, Sailormercury grew stronger and her attacks evolved with her. She is able to trap enemies in ice, and give them a blast of water, not unlike Sailorneptune's Deep Submerge attack.
The evolvement of Sailormercury's powers as a Senshi go right along with her development as a person as Mizuno Amy. When Usagi first meets Ami, she is impressed by a very intelligent, but shy girl who attends school with her. In fact, Ami is known as the "genius girl," who excells in every subject, and kind of viewed as a little snobby. Ami does not have many friends, because she spends most of her time studying or exploring intellectual persuits. An only child, Ami has been left alone a lot. Her mother is a famous surgeon, and her absent father a lauded painter. Ami's dream is to be a doctor like her mother, so she tries very hard at her studies to accomplish this. Ami's friendship with Usagi, Rei, Minako and Makoto brings her out of her solitary world. One of her finest virtues is keeping the group together, and she is usually the mediator in Usagi and Rei's spats. She is very thoughtful and loyal to her friends. As Sailormercury, she is usually the first to go to the defense of Sailormoon, literally putting herself in the line of fire ... again probably mostly as a distraction so the others can use their powers.
Even though Ami is surrounded by loving friends, she still keeps several things to herself. Take her admiration of the Three Lights, for instance, in Sailor Stars. When Rei, Minako and Makoto present their fan club cards to the singing group, Ami surprizes them all by showing card No. 25, the lowest number they've seen for a member of a Three Lights fan club. She also makes her friends' jaws drop by knowing lots of trivia and getting lots of paraphenalia about the group. She is very cute ... and I'm proud of her for having a life of her own.
Ami is also the only Inner Senshi, besides Usagi of course, to have a love interest. A fellow nerd like herself, Urawa Ryo and Ami become friends when they are competing for top scores. Ami befriends him, and learns about his telepathic powers. She and the other Inner Senshi find out that in his body is one of the Rainbow Crystals that Queen Beryl is looking for to retake the moon kingdom. When the crystal is extracted, Ryo turns into a demon. Pleading with the demon's real self, and praying that Sailormoon is able to help him, Sailormercury tries to save her friend.
Urawa Ryo is transformed back into himself, and realizes that the girl he likes is also Sailormercury, someone who he has also held in high esteem. Ami and Ryo do things together, but Ryo ends up moving away. Ami gives him a "good" momento to remember her by, as she waves the train away. This is not the last time the two see each other, in a couple of other episides they also meet, as very good friends.
Amy/Ami is the brains of the team. Anytime anything mentally complex presents itself, she rises to the challenge. Rated with an IQ approaching that of a genius, she can generally solve almost any puzzle that the Sailor Scouts/Senshi finds themselves in. She also is the most aware of Serena/Usagi being an emotional teenager, and not just a superheroine who isn't sensitive to the needs of a young girl. As a Sailor Scout/Senshi, Amy/Ami also fits the description of the idiom 'Brainpower over firepower'. Sailor Mercury's attacks are more defensive then offensive but they get far more powerful as the series progresses.
