1. Students will exhibit continuous growth in
instructional skills and knowledge. |
Students will complete final
examinations in FED 210 and FED 241 in which questions related to
instructional skills and knowledge have been embedded. Faculty will evaluate students’ answers to
embedded questions. |
Students will provide at
least 70% correct answers to each set of embedded questions. Sets include questions on Philosophy, Theories,
Standards, Assessment, Policies, Instruction and Curriculum. |

Test results revealed that
students had substantial difficulty with educational theories. This is an area that is critical to
students’ success on the PRAXIS II exam and thus, certification in secondary
education. Faculty will continue to stress
the importance of educational theories in future classes and will add assignments
that require students to use theories in practical situations. Other Review questions each year
to insure that they continue to cover information provided in lectures, the
textbook, and other course materials and activities. |
2. Students will display effective classroom observation skills. |
Students will complete a
clinical experience in FED 210 and
FED 241 in which they will observe
one or more classroom teachers in action and identify theories, practices, strategies,
etc., covered in their coursework.
They will complete observation forms after each session, and will use
them to write a formal report. Faculty
will assess students’ observation and interpretation skills with a rubric
selected by the department. |
Students will achieve an
average rating of 3 or higher on a scale of 1-4 in each performance category
for observation and interpretation skills. |

Findings revealed that overall
students’ observation and interpretation skills were adequate. However, some students experienced
difficulties with grammar. Faculty
will assign additional writing exercises in future courses and will provide
tutorial assistance as needed. Other Continue to monitor

3. Students will use clear and concise
written communication skills. |
FED 210 and FED 241 students will write
convocation reports, observation summaries, essays
about journal articles, etc. Faculty
will use an assessment rubric to evaluate
documents. |

Students met criteria in all
categories except “mechanics.” Those
experiencing problems in this area, particularly with spelling and punctuation,
were sent to the writing center for help.
Each student wrote a follow-up report after completing this
experience. FED 210 students averaged 3.17 for mechanics on the follow-up; FED 241 students averaged 3.25. Other Faculty will assign additional
writing exercises in future courses and will provide tutorial assistance as
needed. |
