Larry Hagman Biography
(Major Anthony Nelson)

Larry Hagman was born September 21, 1931 in Weatherford, Texas. His mother was actress, Mary Martin, best know for her work as Peter Pan in the early fifties. He was primarily raised by his father (who was divorced) in Texas. Later, he went to live with his grandmother who lived in California. He attended some private schools, and after college, Hagman began his acting career. Some of his early work includes "The Goodyear TV Playhouse" and "The Defenders". (For a more complete listing of his acting work, see Larry Hagman's filmography below.) His first big part came on the soap opera, "The Edge of the Night" from 1961-1963. In 1965, he was cast as Major Anthony Nelson on "I Dream of Jeannie", and he continued that role for five years until the show ended in 1970. In 1971, he once again acted with Barbara Eden in the movie, "Howling in the Woods". After that movie, he acted in two unsuccessful tv series before he landed the role of J.R. Ewing in "Dallas", which ran from 1978-1991. In the final seasons, he once again acted with "Jeannie" star, Barbara Eden. During his years on Dallas, Larry Hagman developed a serious drinking problem and if it wasn't for a successful liver transplant in the early 90's, he would've died. Since the operation, Larry Hagman has been doing much better and is now an anti-smoking spokesman for the American Cancer Society.
