Laser exceeds anti-missile needs, TRW says
Tuesday, October 19, 1999
FROM STAFF REPORTS
TRW Inc. said an Air Force team has completed testing of a
TRW laser module that would be used to shoot down enemy
ballistic missiles after the missiles were launched. TRW, which
is part of the team along with Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin,
said the four-month test program in southern California
exceeded the laser power and beam quality requirements of
the proposed airborne laser missile-defense system. The
Lyndhurst-based company said the test clears the way for the
team to complete work on the design of flight laser modules
and to begin manufacturing the first of six modules. The lasers
would be mounted on a modified Boeing 747 aircraft and shoot
down missiles in their boost phase.
