American Lion (Panthera atrox)
Up to 11 feet in length, and very similar to the modern lions of Africa. Does not
have sabre fangs.
Bear (Short-faced bear)
Taller but more lightly built than modern bears.
Bear Cat (Homotherium)
This creature was very catlike, but walked on flat feet like a bear. It was about
the size of a smilodon, and also had long canine teeth.
Bison (Long-horned bison)
Long-horned bison were abundant on the plains.
Boar (Platygonus)
A large pig-like animal armed with sharp tusks.
Camelops (Humpless camel)
Standing over 6 feet tall, but lightly built, this humpless camel somewhat
resembled a llama.
Dire Wolf (Canis dirus)
Over 6 feet in length, and heavier than modern wolves. Lived in packs and
competed fiercely with the Smilodons for food.
Giant Armadillo (Glyptodon)
Giant armadillos moved into North America near the end of the era. They were
huge, over 10 feet long, with a tall rounded protective shell. They ate grass and
other plants.
Giant Camel (Titanotylopus)
Nearly 12 feet tall, the giant camel did not have a hump due to the abundance
of food in North America.
Giant Sloth (Glossotherium)
An enormous 13 feet long and equipped with huge curved claws, but the
peaceful giant sloth was a vegetarian.
Horse (Equus sp.)
Essentially the same as today's wild horse, with brown markings and a black,
erect mane.
Human (Cro-Magnon)
The end of the Pleistocene era saw the arrival of humans into North America
for the first time. They lived in tribes, hunted, fished, made simple clothes and
shelters, used simple weapons. On Ice Age MUCK, they are also able to
speak with the animals -- but the animals may not be so willing to listen to these
intruders.
Hyena (Chasmaporthetes)
The only North American hyena was slim and fast, similar to a cheetah.
Mammoth (Mammoth imperator)
This 12 foot tall mammoth had large, curved tusks and a long, shaggy coat.
Pronghorn (Antilocapra sp.)
Animals similar to today's pronghorn antelope were common at the time, and
they boasted many different species with unusual horn formations, including 4
horns, twisted horns, and very long horns.
Smilodon (Sabretooth cat)
The classic sabretooth cat, about 4 feet in length. Thought to live in prides like
modern lions.
Tapir
Tapirs were found in North America during this era.
