We need Votes!

A Word From The Founder:

Welcome to the non-partisan League of Men Voters® web site!

My name is Mike Aspen, and I’m the President and Founder of the League. I believe strongly that our League will someday be judged to be perhaps one of the most important non-profit organizations created in many years. I hope you will agree and enjoy what you see here; will visit us often, and contribute to this important effort.

This new web site represents just the first mile of a long and demanding journey ahead that will end when men and women once again are voting at more comparable rates and numbers.

Most Americans are aware that overall voter turnout in the U.S. has been very low over the past couple of decades. But what you might be surprised to learn is that males are by far the major reason for that lower turnout.

THE CHALLENGE:

For every 100 males who vote in national elections…115 females vote!

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 59,284,000 women compared to 51,542,000 men, reported voting in the 2000 presidential election.

That’s almost 8 million fewer male votes!

While being the bearer of bad news is rarely entertaining, we here at the League are going to do our best to keep this web site on the lighter side, but appropriate at the same time.

So to get us started, I want to make it as clear as possible that the League of Men Voters has no desire to browbeat men into becoming better people. But having said that, I think the case can be made that more than a few men have been "napping" in recent decades, giving less and less attention to some behaviors this country has benefited from in the past.

The premise of the League of Men Voters is simply that this is the right time in American history for men to collectively take a hard look at this right we Americans have to select those who represent us. Voting is one area some men have largely abandoned. This has happened despite the fact so many earlier Americans understood voting to be worth risking a great deal for. Why did they believe this? Let's start the conversation here and find out!

A FEW POINTS ABOUT OUR WEB SITE:

  • The problem with voter turnout is certainly not that too many women are voting and working hard to increase their numbers during each election cycle. That is not the view of this organization. In fact, this organization has a healthy respect for the methods and success of those women’s organizations that have been working relentlessly to “get out the female vote” for decades. We at the League of Men Voters believe men should be envious of their efforts and willing to do the same for ourselves!

  • The League recognizes that there are numerous ideas on how to make men better people. That’s great, and there are dozens of web sites out there dedicated to just that. On this web site, however, we will focus on specific ideas to increase the actual numbers of male voters. We want to hear your ideas on this subject!

  • Neither the League nor this web site will be allowed to become a forum for those who wish to convince others that men should embrace a form of collective guilt for the decisions our country’s Founding Fathers made regarding a woman’s right to vote. Because the League will concentrate on the future voting behavior of men, we emphatically view any vilification of our country’s early leaders or their decisions to be contrary to the goals of this organization. The new reality is that men are voting nearly 8 million fewer times than women in presidential elections. That is where we will keep our focus... and doing this is a big enough challenge for us.

We all need to know who and what we are voting for, of course. This web site includes links to Project Vote Smart at www.vote-smart.org. If you wish to learn more about a specific local or national candidate, how the incumbent has been voting, information about their campaign finances, or just enjoy a non-partisan look at the issues, this link will provide it for you.

The League of Men Voters® believes that men must be consistently included in strategies and attempts to get more Americans to vote. With your help, the future will show us leading efforts throughout the nation to ‘get out the male vote’ in ways not always dissimilar to those some successful women’s groups have used for decades. We will do this well or face the very real prospect of continuing to witness men have less and less chance to influence their representatives in matters that may be uniquely relevant to them as a voter demographic.

It’s a great day to get some chores done! And if you click here , you will find an overview of the League of Men Voters®. Please give it a read, and let’s get started!
