Rubius was the leader of the Ayakashi Sisters in the first arc of Sailormoon R. His job was to retrieve the Rabbit and the ginzuishou. Downright nasty, he manipulated the sisters Ayakashi to no end. However, his arrogance and riskiness was his downfall. After losing the sisters Ayakashi, Rubius was easy pickings. He managed to capture all the soldiers on his spaceship (complete with ticking time bomb) but Sailormoon and Chibiusa worked together to defeat him. After weakening Rubius, the Senshi teleported away from the spaceship to safety. Rubius soon blew up with his spaceship…thus ending the first arc.

It was clear from Esmeraude's first appearance that she did not respect Rubius one little bit. She constantly gloated over the poor jerk, taking great pride in taunting his plans. When he practically begged her to save him from his exploding spaceship, she let out that infamous laugh of hers and swatted his hand away, gleefully taking over his role.
