An excerpt from my journal on May 26th... "Sitting
outside [Nyok's] place. He lives in what you call a rondeval. In the countryside,
the houses around here are made of mud. They're circular and on the top
is a thatched roof in the shape of a cone. That is what people have traditionally
lived in… With the influx of industrialization, modernization, such things,
people started making them with concrete and using corrugated tin for
the roof. This rondeval that he lives in is one of the residences on campus.
They put two people into a rondeval. It's got concrete walls and glass
windows and a door. But the roof is made of thatch. Right now we've been
listening to music, just feeling some vibes. Its nice to hear music loud
cause its not something I get to hear too much here. Things like radios
are really expensive in comparison to what people spend on everyday life
here. So its rare to be around expensive things like a radio, but its
nice to hear the music loud tonight and it's the first time I've brought
my CDs over… It's nice to have a night or release, listen to reggae, be
refreshed." |
