AMHERSTBURG - A local youth organization is organizing Amherstburg's first Terry Fox Run.

Youth For A Better World will be staging the fundraiser next Sunday, September 16 at Malden Centre Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Terry Fox Foundation raises funds for use in cancer research primarily through the Terry Fox Run, now entering its 21st year. Last year's Terry Fox Run raised $21.6 million at run sites across Canada. It was estimated that 1.6 million participants too part in the event.

Lindsay Logsdon is one of the organizers of the event.

"I saw something on television earlier this summer about the 20th anniversary of Terry Fox's death," she said. "I went to the website and saw that they were looking for someone to organize a run in Amherstburg. It's never been held here before."

Youth For A Better World has about 15 members in Amherstburg, Harrow, and LaSalle, as well as many non-members who continually help with a variety of causes, Logsdon said. The group felt it was a good initiative to get involved with.

There will be a variety of family activities planned in conjunction with the Run next Sunday including a noon-hour barbecue as well as face painting for youngsters.

"It's a family event," she said. "We got a bit a late start on this. We are still looking for a few people to help out."

Pledge sheets have been distributed to a number of businesses in Amherstburg and Harrow. Anyone interested in helping out can contact Lindsay Logsdon at 736-9977 or 567-7804.
