AMHERSTBURG - For the very first time, Amherstburg residents will have a chance to participate in a Terry Fox Run. The group Youth For A Better World is organizing a run to be held Sept. 16 at Malden Centre Park.
Lindsay Logsdon says the group got the idea after watching a TV special on Terry Fox. "We went to the website and got the information on how to organize a run," she said. "Once we decided to go ahead, we were sent posters, pledge sheets, and merchandise like t-shirts, hats, and buttons."
Anyone interested in taking part in the Run can pick up pledge sheets at various stores throughout Amherstburg and Harrow. On the day of the Run, registration will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. The Run itself is over at 4 p.m.
All proceeds from the event will go towards cancer research. Logsdon says that everyone is welcome as the event is being organized as a family affair.
"There will be face painting for the kids as well as a barbecue," she said. Participants will run around the park. There is no set distance that has to be attained.
Since this is the first time the a Terry Fox Run will be held in Amherstburg, Logsdon is hoping for the best. "We hope to make it an annual event," se said.
Youth For A Better World developed out of another organization called Teens Against Domestic Violence. The group decided to expand their interests and get involved in other issues. There are approximately 15 members with most coming from Amherstburg, LaSalle, and Harrow. There are also many non-members who help with many events.
In a few weeks Youth For A Better World will hold a fur protest. With the help of the internet, another chapter of the organization has formed in Calgary.
"There's a lot of interest and we have been glad to go nation-wide."
The organization has a constitution and bylaws and is currently waiting for non-profit status from the government.
