Something I Didn't Think Of
Topic: Inspiration
Tuesday 6:16pm 20Feb07

I've been reading Wabi Sabi for Writers by Richard R. Powell. Under Inspiration he has a section called Listening to the Masters. In that section he discusses listening to audio books. Now I've always thought why listen to audio books when you can sit down and read the book but I will definitely start doing both.

He says, "I found that sometimes the power and richness of a work would trigger an overwhelming desire to write... Over the years, I have gone back to some favorite audio books to inspire and motivate me."

And the more I think about it, most writing instructors will tell you to read your writing out loud because when you hear your words you often can find problems in the language that you don't see when you are reading them. Of course! Why wouldn't I listen to audio books to hear the language?

Crazy! So that's yet another thing to add to my list of things to buy when the money is less funny or as I've been saying more, "when my finances are organized." In the prosperity literature it's not good to say that you are broke or poor.

Hmm! I think itunes has audio books too. ha!

Henry David Thoreau
Topic: Inspiration
Monday 11:48pm 12Feb07

Was about to go to bed and decided I'd read another page before I go down. I've pulled out the book, Wabi Sabi for Writers by Richard R. Powell. I found a nice little entry that reminds me that all this freeflow writing that seems like it's sometimes not going anywhere really will get me somewhere...

"Henry David Thoreau filled thirty-nine journals with more than two million words during the course of his short life. Out of that two-million word stream of consciousness he gleaned enough usable text for three books and a few essays. Several other works were extracted from this reservoir after his death..."

I have two trunks filled with my journals. I keep meaning to finally start sorting through them. Maybe that will be a goal for this year. I also have my mother's journals that I still haven't brought myself to go through.

Another thing that I've been doing lately is writing myself a daily email of 100 words (the minimum) of observations. I find that I can come up with ideas for my novel's direction and write some snippets that I can use later.

Happy writing for any of you writers that may find these entries...

Okay, I'm really going to bed now, I have to get up in 4 hours!

My Dream - to rescue animals
Topic: Inspiration

My black cat Saki used to kiss me full on the lips! If I had the land and the resources I would want to rescue animals. I couldn't let this article pass by. EY

Colombian nurses animals back to health

By INALDO PEREZ, Associated Press WriterSun Jan 7, 10:07 PM ET
Through the bars of his cage, an African lion named Jupiter stretches his giant paws around the neck of Ana Julia Torres and plants a kiss on her puckered lips.

It could be a kiss of gratitude: Since Jupiter was rescued six years ago from a life of abuse and malnutrition in a traveling circus, Torres has fed and nursed him back to health at her Villa Lorena shelter for injured and mistreated animals.

"Here we have animals that are lame, missing limbs, blind, cross-eyed, disabled," said Torres, 47, who relies on donations and her own modest teacher's salary to run the shelter in a poor neighborhood in the southern city of Cali. "They come to us malnourished, wounded, burned, stabbed, with gunshots."

Torres said her work rehabilitating animals began more than a decade ago when a friend gave her an owl that had been kept as a pet. Later, when she asked her students to bring their pets to school, she realized many families illegally kept wild fauna from Colombia's biologically diverse jungles in their homes.

The number of animals under her care grew, and today Jupiter is among 800 recovering creatures at Villa Lorena — from burned peacocks and limbless flamencos to blind monkeys and mutilated elephants.

Most of the animals are caged, though some, like iguanas, roam freely around the impeccably clean grounds enclosed by a 13-foot wall. Inside is a monument that the state governor dedicated in recognition of Torres' work.

Torres said many of the animals were rejected as infants by their parents in the wild or found abandoned on the streets of Cali, a city of 2 million.

Others were rescued from cruel treatment by owners. One mountain lion kept illegally as a pet had its two front legs cut off by its owner after it clawed a family member's face.

Torres said that of all the animals she has cared for, she is proudest of having rescued Yeyo, a now-deceased spider monkey who had suffered violent, drunken beatings at the hands of an alcoholic owner.

"The monkey would scream every time it was beaten, until one day the police came and found the wall covered in blood," she said.

Two veterinarians saved Yeyo from death, though it lost an eye and its teeth from the abuse. Yeyo remained terrified of people, cowering in the corner of the cage at the sound of footsteps, she said.

Torres said she opposes exhibiting animals in circuses and has therefore kept her shelter closed to the public.

"We want the animals to live in peace," Torres said. "All their life they were shown at circuses and shows — this is a paradise where they can finally rest."

Digging for Nuggets
Topic: Inspiration
Wednesday 6:13pm 13Dec06

I like to underline phrases in other peoples writing as a jumping off point for my writing. Digging for nuggets is what I call it. I probably got that term from some book but maybe I didn't, who knows?

In Remembered Rapture, bell hooks quotes Rumi, "Do you want the words or will you live what you know?"

Lately my life seems to feel as though it's about choices in an either/or stance. If I ask for this I can't ask for that. I'm not sure where these limitations came from. What I really need to be looking at is having the best of both worlds. I am a mingler by nature. I like to be around different people not focusing in on one type or group of people too tough. Even my taste in men doesn't fall under a cookie cutter type. I need to guide my life into the variety. A buffet or smorgasbord of all the things I love.

bell hooks response is that she writes to live.

I want a party and discipline. I want the man and the silence. I want the words and I want to live what I know. Instead of just wanting it all, I want to have as much of all as I can get.
