Yami is the spirit that inhabits the millennium puzzle. When he first appears in the manga he takes over for Yugi with out Yugi knowing it, thus poor Yugi kept loosing time. Yami would come out every time Yugi was wronged in some way. Yami would have the person, who wronged Yugi, play a game with him. These games were a fashion of pay back. Each one of them had a different poetic justice type consequence. In the anime Yami just takes over ever time Yugi duels some one. It’s not till latter in Duelist Kingdom that Yugi actually starts to realized that he has a spirit sharing his body, and at that time starts to try to confront this spirit. They two become friends rather quickly though and start to work together as a very hard to beat team.
