George succeeded his grandfather when he was aged ten years. He was ayouth "of lovely countenance and appearance". When the King went to Francein 1535 to marry Lady Magdaline, the daughter of the King of France, henominated the Earl of Hunt ly (then aged about twenty eight years) Lieutenent in thekingdom in his absence.
The Earl so prudently managed affairs of the nation that there were notumults nor disorders committed all that time; and the King, finding suchpeace and quiet upon his return, continued ever after, to have a very greatesteem for Huntly, an d employed him in the most important affairs in all the timeof his reign.
He married Lady ELizabeth Keith, daughter of the Earl Marischal. Theyhad nine sons and three daughters.
Sir George became the Lord High Chancellor of the kingdom. He wasapointed a General to Her Majesty's (Queen Mary's) forces. During Queen Mary;scaptivity in England, Huntly continued as a dutiful and loyal subject anddefended her cause to th e last extremity.
"The loyalty of the Gordon family to their Prince has always beenconstant, and no Gordon is mentioned to have bore arms in any faction or partyopposite to the supreme authority, whether swayed by the kings themselves, ormanaged by regents. "
George VI was appointed Lord Lieutenant of all the north of Scotland. He was active in the affairs of his community. He was created the Marquis ofHuntly.
