Notes Weis" "Ancestral Roots. . ." (53:20), (101:20), (106:20), (107:19), (141:20), (144A:20). Note that there is a "minority opinion" held by some serious scholars that Adelaide's Aquitainian descent is insufficiaently proven.
"Todd A. Farmerie" posted to GEN-MEDIEVAL@@rootsweb.com on 22 Oct 1997 (in part): Subject: Re: Poppa (was: grandfather of Hugh Capet's wife) "I was reading an article by Constance Bouchard over the weekend on the naming patters for Medieva l women (it was in Medieval Prosopography, vol. 14, no. 1, pp. 1-?). She stated that Adelaide, wife of HUGH CAPET, is of unknown parentage. She was not from the Poitou/Aquitaine family, that resulting from the misreading of a document. She remains unidentified (although the names Adelaide and Gisela (given to her daughter, and not a Robertin name) might suggest a link with the later Caroligians - this is my own speculation, not Bouchard's)."
Christian Settipani in "La prehistoire des Capetiens" (1993), pp. 415-419, discusses questions raised about the identity of Adelaide, wife of HUGH CAPET. He explicitly comments on Bouchard's article, "Patterns of women's names in royal lin eages, ninth-eleventh centuries," Medieval prosopography, ix(1)(1988), pp. 1-32, as well as other objections by her and by others. He concludes the the objections are wanting, and that WILLIAM I of Poutou [III of Aquitaine] is Adelaide's fa ther (as in ES ii, 76).

Note: > Who was the father of Adelaide wife of Renaud I comt e d e Never s, Hugues I "Capet" or his son Robert II king of France? I h a v e a dynastic table that gives an Adelaide to each of them an d m a rries Renaud to Hugues daughter. F rancois Velde in his web p a g e givesalso two Adelaide but marries Renaud to Robert's daughte r.
This was the subject of much confusion until clarifie d b y a coup leof articles in Medieval Prosopography. There were two ro y a lprincesses who historians refered to by the name Adela or it s varian t s, andwho were each claimed to be a daughter of Rober t II. Becau s e of this double Adele, it had been argued that on e of them, the wi f e of Renaud, was actually Robert's sister, th e daughter of Hu g h Capet. In fact, both were daughters of Rober t II, but both were N O T named Adelaide. The wife of Renaud was A lvais, a derivative fo r m of the name Hedwig and a German name br ought into the family b y t he wifeof Hugh Magnus. The wife of B aldwin of Flanders was named A d elais, which shares similar roo t s with Adelaide. Because of t h e failureto recognize the forme r as a separate name from the latter , i t caused historians to 'f ix' a problem that didn't really exist . R ecentwork has demonst rated clearly that both were Robert's. - - taf

He was educatedat Reims under the French scholar, Gerbert, who became Pope SylvesterII. When Robert became King he married his Second wife, Bertha,of Bourgogne his cousin. Two year s later he wasexcommunicated by Pope Gregory V and the marriage was annulled. In 1003Robert submitted to the pope and married Constance of Arles, with whom he had four sons. Robert passed the crown to his oldest son,Hugh, but at his death in 1025, the other sons, aided by their mother, revolted and Robert was still fighting them at his own death in 103l. He was called The Pious because of his humility andcharity. He was a very good soldier and ruler.
Called Robert the Pious. He was educated at Reims under the French scholar Gerbert, who later became Pope Sylvester II. Pope Gregory V (died 999) excommunicated him and annulled his marriage, which was considered incestuous by the church; i n 1003 Robert submitted to the pope and married the daughter of the marquis of Provence. He recognized Hugh, the eldest of these sons, as his successor. After Hugh's death in 1025, the other sons, aided by their mother, revolted; Robert was still fighting them at the time of his own death. Robert was called The Pious because of his humility and charity; he was also esteemed as a soldier and ruler Also Known As: Robert "LePieux". Born: between 27 Mar 970 and 972 inOrleans, Loi ret, Orleanais, France, son of Hughes II, King de France andAdelaide de Poitiers, Some sources indicate that Robert II was born inthe year 972 while other indicate the date 27 March 970 which would makehis birth some three months after his father, Hughes Capet's, marriage tohis mother, Adelaide. Married in 989: Rosela=Suzanne, Princess of Italy, daughter of Berenger II, King of Italy and Willa d'Arles ; It isconsidered a strange idea on the part of Hughes that his young son sh ouldmarry a woman who was some 32-years [some say she was even 37 years]older than Robert. In 988, she had become the widow of Arnoul II de Flandre. She is quite pretty but has "troubling" blackeyes, but most importantly, she brings as dowr y Montreuil-sur-Mer. Thiswill allow the capetian sovereigns to have access to the French Channel.Repudiated: Rosela=Suzanne, Princess of Italy in 992 in France Robert IIrepudiated his wife because she was "an old woman", but he would keep t hedowry of Montreuil-sur-Mer. Note - between 996 and 1031: Robert II becameKing of France upon the death of his father on 24 October 996. In 1000, Angers is destroyed by fire. When the King's Uncle, Henri, Duke ofBurgundy died without heir in 1002 {the same year Strasbourg is completeydestroyed by fire), Otto-Guillaume, Count of Burgundy, supported by theChatelains, and local prelats. wanted to expand his territories. But,King Robert would have none of it, claiming that the d uchy should remain without thecapetian family. With the help of the Abbe of Cluny and the Bishop ofAutun, and also supported by the Duke of Normandie, King Robert undertooka veritable conquest of Burgundy which would last some 12 years. In 1002,Robert helped the Lombards to establish a King for themselves in theperson of Arduin of Ivrea [d'Ivree] . In 1015, Brunon, Bishop of Langres, and principal ally of the Count of Burgundy, dies, and Otto-Guillaumerenders Hommage to the Ki ng. Robert gives the Duchy to his son, Henri, but it is in title only, as the King insists on keeping the power of theproperties of the kingdom as well as their revenues. In the footsteps ofhis father, Robert II associates his eldest son, Hu ghes, to the throne in1017. This really miffs the lords of the court who were hoping for anelection. But it is Queen Constance herself, who sees to it that her sondoes not get the least lands as part of the deal. In 1018, Poitiers andBeauva is both are ravaged by fire, and the next year Rouen and Chartres also are destroyed by fire. In1023, Eudes II de Blois takes over the succession of Champagne. Thus, thenext 200 years, Blois, Chartres and Champagne would be a constant menac eto the scant royal properties. Though Robert "Le Pieux" and Henri II,Emperor of Germany worked toward peace, these efforts came to an end in1024 upon the death of Henri II. When Robert's eldest son, Hughes dies in 1026, Robert prepares his second son,who would be Henri I. Married in 997 in Tours, Indre-et-Loire, Touraine,France: Princess Berthe de Bourgogne, daughter of Conrad I, King deBourgogne and Mahaut=Mathilde, Princess de France; Robert had madeBerthe, the beautiful w idow of the Count of Anjou, his mistress in 996.But because it was better to sin a little bit than to sin a lot, hemarried her as King. They are related in the third degree, and Robert isthe godfather of one of Berthe's children. This spiri tual relationshipmakes the marriage incestuous in the eyes of the Church. In 998, theCouncil, called by then Pope Gregory V, stipulates that Robert shouldleave Berthe forever, and do penance for 7 years in accordance with thelaws of the Chu rch. In the midst of the deliberations, Gregory V dies andis replaced by Pope Sylvester II who is none other than the Monk,Gerbert, ancient mentor of the King. However, while the pronouncement ofan anathema is lifted, the excommunication is maintained. In 1001, Robert concedes. Two years later,in 1003, he marries Constance. That same year on 7 February 1003, the oldQueen Suzanne died. Repudiated: Princess Berthe de Bourgogne between 1001and 1003. Married in 1003 in France: Co nstance de Provence, daughter of Guillaume I/II, Count de Provence and Adelais=Adele d'Anjou;Constance was Robert II's third wife. Constance would immediately satisfy Robert's needs for a maleheir by giving him four boys, but her cruelty [w hen Constance spotted oneof her mentors accused of heresy opn his way to the pyre to be burnedalive, she stepped up to him and pierced one of his eyes with the pin ofher corsage] and Southern ways would alienated and antagonize the Court.Th e couple remained married beyond 1010, after Robert had been persuaded by Pope Sergius IV not to divorceConstance, but continued to quarrel until Robert's death. Hughes, theireldest son, was crowned in 1017, but died in 1025. The next son, Henry, was Robert's choice, but Constance favored their third son, Robert andfomented rebellions in his favor. Died: on 20 Jul 1031 in Meulun,Seine-et-Oise, Ile-de-France, France, Robert II is buried at Saint Denis.
