John Stewart was also Lord Darnley.
Sir Gilbert was one of the six Regents of Scotland during the minority ofJames III. He became 1st Lord Kennedy in 1452.

Created Lord Darnley in 1460, he was Lord Warden of the Western Marchesin 1481, and was one of the Lords who seized King James III in the"Bell-the-Cat" incident at Lauder Bridge in 1482, an act for which he waspardoned. He was retoured heir to the earldom of Lennox in 1473, but onlybecame so effectively after compensating the co-heirs, which wasaccomplished in 1488. He was joint keeper with his son, of DunbartonCastle in 1488. He rebelled against the regicidal government, but wasbetrayed while about to ford the Forth, and his forces were routed bythose of Lord Drummond and young King James IV in 1489. Again, he waspardoned by the King and the Pope.
