John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster (1340-99), English soldier and statesman, the fourth son of King Edward III of England, and brother of Edward, the Black Prince. John was born in March 1340 in Ghent (M.E., Gaunt), now in Belgium. In 1359 h e married Blanche, daughter of Henry, duke of Lancaster; when Henry died, John became duke. John of Gaunt played an important part in the wars of the period between England and France and between England and Spain. He commanded a division o f the English army, led by the Black Prince, that defeated the army of Henry (later Henry II, king of Castile and Len) at Njera in 1367. As a result of his second marriage, to Constance, daughter of Peter the Cruel (king of Castile and Len) , John laid claim to the throne of Castile. During the Hundred Years' War, he aided (1370-71) the Black Prince against France and established English rule over most of southern France. After a severe illness forced the return of the Black P rince to England, John took command of the English armies; by 1380 he had lost much of the territory the English had previously won. In 1386 John invaded Castile, but was defeated by John I, king of Castile and Len. John of Gaunt gave up hi s claim to Castile and Len in 1387, when his daughter married Henry, later Henry III, king of Castile and Len. John of Gaunt was also prominent in English affairs. Together with Alice Perrers, his father's mistress, John dominated the Engli sh government. He was opposed by Parliament and by the Black Prince. In 1376 Parliament banished Alice Perrers and curtailed John's powers. The death of the Black Prince that year and the dissolution of Parliament, however, enabled John to regain his power. In 1377, on the death of Edward III and the accession of Richard II (John's nephew and son of the Black Prince), John gave up his control of the government and thereafter played the role of peacemaker; he also supported th e king, by whom he was made (1390) duke of Aquitaine. In 1396, after the death of his second wife, John married his mistress Catherine Swynford, and Richard legitimized their children the following year.     York, House of

York, House of, English royal line that in the latter half of the 15thcentury disputed the throne of England with the house of Lancaster. BothYork and Lancaster were branches of the royal house of Plantagenet. Theirdynastic rivalry develop ed into the Wars of the Roses, so named becausethe Yorkist emblem was the white rose and the Lancastrian emblem the redrose.
The title "duke of York" was created in 1385 for Edmund of Langley, fifthson of King Edward III. Edmund's grandson, Richard Plantagenet, 3rd dukeof York, laid claim to the throne then occupied by King Henry VI, who wasdescended from John o f Gaunt, the fourth son of Edward III and was headof the house of Lancaster. Richard Plantagenet claimed a prior right toit through his maternal grandfather, Roger VI de Mortimer, 4th earl ofMarch and Ulster, whose son had been recognized a s heir presumptive byKing Richard II. Richard Plantagenet's claim was considered just byParliament, and it was agreed that the house of York should inherit thethrone on Henry's death. Henry consented to this proposed arrangement.
Henry's wife, Margaret of Anjou, however, wanted her son, Edward, Princeof Wales, to succeed his father, and in 1455 she raised an army to defendhis claim, thus beginning the Wars of the Roses. Richard Plantagenet waskilled in the battle a t Wakefield in 1460, but in 1461 his eldest son wasproclaimed Edward IV, king of England, the first of the Yorkist line ofEnglish kings.
On the death of Edward IV in 1483, his eldest son, a boy aged 12, becameking as Edward V. The young king was promptly imprisoned with his youngerbrother in the Tower of London by his paternal uncle, RichardPlantagenet, duke of Gloucester, who was crowned King Richard III on June26, 1483. Edward V and his brother disappeared soon after Richard'scoronation and tradition holds Richard responsible for having themkilled. Modern scholarship, however, has cast doubt on the question ofhis guilt. In 1485 Richard III was killed in the Battle of BosworthField, the last action of the Wars of the Roses. With his death, the Yorkdynasty came to an end.
The victor at Bosworth Field was Henry Tudor, earl of Richmond, who wasdescended through his mother from the house of Lancaster. He ascended thethrone as King Henry VII and was the first English king of the house ofTudor. He strengthened h is right to the throne by marrying Elizabeth, thedaughter of the Yorkist king Edward IV.
After 1485 descendants of Edward IV's sister, Elizabeth, and brother,George, duke of Clarence, and impostors like Perkin Warbeck, pressedclaims to the throne. The last serious pretender to the throne from thehouse of York was Elizabeth's s on, Richard de la Pole.

John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster, 4th son of Edward the 3rd of England. He acquired the Lancaster holdings (see Lancaster, House of) through marriage and became one of the most influential nobles in England. He served under his brother Edw ard "the Black Prince" in the Hundred Years War and by his second marriage (1371) gained a claim on the throne of Castile. For a short time John, in effect, ruled England for his aging father; he remained powerful under his nephew Richard 2nd. from 1386 to 1388 he fought in vain to make his Castilian claims. Returning (1389) to England. John helped to restore peace between Richard 2nd and the barons. In 1396 he married Catherine Swynford; they were ancestors of the Tudor s. John was the patron Chaucer. His eldest son was Henry 4th.
