1. Robert III reigned from 1390 to 1406. Robert had the misfortune tobe born ten years before his father and mother married. In a curioustwist, perhaps through a sign of affection for his father but morereadily through superstition, he wa s baptized John but ruled as Robert.
Robert III came to the throne at the age of 53 and faced the menace ofthe Highlanders who were not beyond ravaging the lowland areas ofScotland. He handed the effective regency over to his brother in thecapacity of guardian against these c lans partially because he had beeninjured by a horses kick and was to injured to rule effectively. Heentitled his brother 'Duke Albany. At the same time he created his ownson the Duke Rothesay.
The Duke Rothesay was killed in suspicious circumstances after a quarrelwith the Duke Albany following an invasion of Scotland by Henry IV ofEngland. This left Robert's one remaining son, James, as the heir to thethrone. It is said that th e shock of the news that James had beencaptured by the English whilst on route to France contributed to thedeath of Robert in 1406.
