Upon the decease, without issue, of John Nevill, Lord Latimer, of Danby, several of his lordship's estates passed to his elder brother of thehalf-blood, Ralph Nevill, 1st Earl of Westmoreland, who settled thoselands by feoffment on Sir Geor ge Nevill, one of his sons by his 2nd wife,Joane, dau. of John of Gaunt, which Sir George Nevill was, thereupon, thenext ensuing year, 25 February 1432, summoned to parliament as BaronLatimer, and from that date until 7 September, 1469. In the 13th Henry VI[1435], this nobleman was one of the chief commanders of the king'sforces then raised in the north for the defence of those parts againstthe Scots. The same year, his lordship came to an agreement with Maud,Countess of Camb ridge (widow of his half-uncle, John, Lord Latimer, ofDanby), to this effect, viz.: That if they should, by advice of theircounsel, grant unto Sir John Willoughby, Knt. (for the purpose ofavoiding litigation), and of those lands which forme rly belonged to thesaid John, Lord Latimer, that she should give of the said grants, twoparts, and he, Lord Latimer, one. And in case of any suit commenced bySir John Willoughby against them (by reason of his being the next heir ofblood of the said John, Lord Latimer, of Danby), for any of those lands, she to pay two-third parts and he the other part of the costs incurredthereby. Lord Latimer m. Lady Elizabeth Beauchamp, 3rd dau. by his 1stwife of Richard, Earl of Warwick, by whom he had issue, Henry, Thomas,Jane and Catherine. Lord Latimer, it appears, in the latter years of hislife, became an idiot, and King Edward IV, in consequence, committed allhis lands and lordships to the care of his nephew, Richard Nevi ll, Earlof Warwick. He d. 30 December, 1469, and was s. by his grandson, SirRichard Nevill, 2nd baron.
