King from 1437-1460.
Death: died young
BIOGRAPHY: Not for the first time in the former century and a half the heir to throne was of tender years. Perhaps what is more striking is that James was King of Scotland at the age of just seventeen months. A Governor was required to rule , nominally in the interest of the infant king. This Governor was John Duke of Albany, a grandson of James II of Scotland. This governorship led to a bitter dispute as Albany was a staunch Francophile and even spoke French as his first lang uage. This leaning he had towards France was directly opposed by those who preferred the friendship of England. In the end Albany was dismissed as Governor due to him spending more time in France than in Scotland. James now came to power fu lly. At the age of 14 he ordered the suppression of the warring clans and the destruction of the border raiders. Later he fell out with King Henry VIII of England over his apparent leaning towards France. Once more war broke out with the Sc ots being humiliated at the Battle of Solway Moss. With no surviving (legitimate) children and close to death he was told of the birth of perhaps the most famous Stewart of all, his daughter Mary Stewart. James had married in Paris in 1537. His bride on this occasion was Princess Madeleine de Valois of France. The marriage was short-lived as Madeleine died just 6 months later. His second marriage, to Marie de Guise Lorraine, brought him three children. Unfortunately both Jame s and Arthur died in infancy. He was survived by Mary however.
BIOGRAPHY: Following the murder of his father James came to the throne of Scotland at the age of fifteen. He had been with the rebellious lords who had defeated his father at the Battle of Sauchieburn and came to the throne not as naive as many of his contemporaries. Wars with England was becoming something of a habit and James IV can claim to have been involved in two of them. The first was in support of the impostor Perkin Warbeck. Warbeck claimed to be a survivor of the mu rders of the princes in the tower and therefore the rightful claimant to the English throne. This was false but James was not to know this. He attacked England and was only stopped by Henry VII offering his daughter in marriage to James. Ja mes accepted. Once more the tide of decision turned and James once again attacked England. This invasion was doomed and at Flodden field in September 1513 the power base of Scotland was virtually wiped out. James' marriage to Margaret Tudor brought six babies into the world, of which only two survived to a fruitful age; James and Alexander.

BIOGRAPHY: Like many of his predecessors James II came to the throne at an early age. He was one of twins, with his brother Alexander dying in infancy. James II reign was stained throughout by warfare between the Scots and the English and b etween the Scots themselves. He had to destroy the Earls of Douglas through trickery and the only time the Scots were anything like unified was when they were fighting the English. The end of James' turbulent reign came in 1460 when he died , fittingly enough, at the siege of English held Roxburgh Castle. James was married once, to the daughter of the Duke of Guelders. She gave him six children; James, Alexander, David, John, Mary and Margaret.

BIOGRAPHY: King of England and Scotland, who succeeded his brother Charles II in 1685. James was born in St James's Palace in 1633. Several attempts were made to exclude him from the succession because he was a Catholic, especially followin g the alleged popish plot to murder King Charles. James's pro-Catholic policies aroused intense opposition, and when he produced a Catholic heir (James Francis Edward , the Old Pretender) open revolt broke out. He was deposed in 1688 and th e glorious revolution put his Protestant son-in-law and daughter, William and Mary, on the throne. James's attempt to regain the throne was thwarted at the Battle of the Boyne, after which he spent the rest of his life in exile in France.
King of Scotland
James I (of England)
James I (of England) (1566-1625), king of England (1603-25) and, asJames VI, king of Scotland (1567-1625).
Born on June 19, 1566, in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland, James was the onlyson of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. WhenMary was forced to abdicate in 1567, he was proclaimed king of Scotland.A succession of regents ruled the kingdom until 1576, when James becamenominal ruler. The boy king was little more than a puppet in the hands ofpolitical intriguers until 1581. In that year, with the aid of hisfavorites, James Stuart, earl of Arran, and Esm t, duke of Lennox,James assumed actual rule of Scotland. Scotland was at that time divideddomestically by conflict between the Protestants and the Roman Catholics, and in foreign affairs by those favoring an alliance with France andthose sup porting England. In 1582 James was kidnapped by a group ofProtestant nobles headed by William Ruthven, earl of Gowrie, and was heldvirtual prisoner until he escaped the next year.
In 1586, by the Treaty of Berwick, James formed an alliance with hiscousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, and the following year, after theexecution of his mother, he succeeded in reducing the power of the greatRoman Catholic nobles. His m arriage to Anne of Denmark in 1589 broughthim for a time into close relationship with the Protestants. After theGowrie conspiracy of 1600, James repressed the Protestants as strongly ashe had the Catholics. He replaced the feudal power of t he nobility with astrong central government, and maintaining the divine right of kings, heenforced the superiority of the state over the church.
In 1603 Queen Elizabeth died childless, and James succeeded her as JamesI, the first Stuart king of England. In 1604 he ended England's war withSpain, but his tactless attitude toward Parliament, based on his beliefin divine right, led to prolonged conflict with that body. James convokedthe Hampton Court Conference (1604), at which he authorized a newtranslation of the Bible, generally called the King James Version. Hisundue severity toward Roman Catholics, however, led to t he abortiveGunpowder Plot in 1605. James tried unsuccessfully to advance the causeof religious peace in Europe, giving his daughter Elizabeth in marriageto the elector of the Palatinate, Frederick V, the leader of the GermanProtestants. He also sought to end the conflict by attempting to arrangea marriage between his son, Charles, and the infanta of Spain, then theprincipal Catholic power. When he was rebuffed, he formed an alliancewith France and declared war on Spain, thus contributing to the flames hehad tried to quench. James I died at the Theobalds in Hertfordshire onMarch 27, 1625, and was succeeded to the throne by his son, Charles I.
NOTES: He was 17 months old when his father (James IV) was killed. Hismother acted as regent until her marriage in 1514 to Archibald, 6th earlof Angus. In 1525, during the continued struggle for control of thecountry, James was taken priso ner by his stepfather. Three years laterthe King escaped and assumed control of Scotland. His uncle, Henry VIII,King of England, tried to induce James to repudiate the authority of theRoman Catholic Church, but James refused, and relations between Englandand Scotland became strained; in 1542 war broke out.

1 NAME James of the Fiery /Face/
James IV (b. March 17, 1473--d. Sept. 9, 1513, near Branxton,Northumberland, Eng.), king of Scotland from 1488 to 1513. An energeticand popular ruler, he unified Scotland under royal control, strengthenedroyal finances, and improved Scotlan d's position in European politics.
James succeeded to the throne after his father, James III, was killed ina battle against rebels on June 11, 1488. The 15-year-old monarchimmediately began to take an active part in government. He extended hisauthority to the sparsely popul ated areas of western and northernScotland and by 1493 had humbled the last lord of the Isles.
Although his reign was internally peaceful, it was disturbed by wars withEngland. Breaking a truce with England in 1495, James prepared aninvasion in support of Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the English throne. The war was confined to a fe w border forays, and a seven-year peace wasnegotiated in December 1497, though border raids continued. Relationsbetween England and Scotland were further stabilized in 1503, when Jamesmarried Margaret Tudor, the eldest daughter of the Engli sh king HenryVII; this match resulted, a century later, in the accession of James'sgreat-grandson, the Stuart monarch James VI of Scotland, to the Englishthrone as King James I.
James IV's growing prestige enabled him to negotiate as an equal with therulers of continental Europe, but his position was weakened as he cameinto conflict with King Henry VIII of England (ruled 1509-47). In 1512James allied with France a gainst England and the major continentalpowers. When Henry invaded France in 1513, James decided, against thecounsel of his advisers, to aid his ally by advancing into England. Hecaptured four castles in northern England in August 1513, but his armywas disastrously defeated at the Battle of Flodden, near Branxton, onSept. 9, 1513. The King was killed while fighting on foot, and most ofhis nobles perished. James left one legitimate child, his successor,James V (ruled 1513-42); in addition, he had many illegitimate children, several of whom became prominent figures in Scotland.
True to the ideal of the Renaissance prince, James strove to make hiscourt a centre of refinement and learning. He patronized literature, licensed Scotland's first printers, and improved education. His career isrecounted in R.L. Mackie's Ki ng James IV of Scotland (1958). [BritannicaCD '97]
----------
James IV (1488-1513) James IV, born on 17 March 1473, was 15 when hisfather's enemies forced him to ride with them to the Battle ofSauchieburn, and for the rest of his life he wore an iron belt as apenance. For the first time in a century, Scotland had a king who wasable to start ruling for himself at once for, as Erasmus once commented,'He had wonderful powers of mind, an astonishing knowledge of everything,an unconquerable magnanimity and the most abundant generosity.' He spokeLatin (at that time the international language), French, German, Flemish,Italian, Spanish and some Gaelic, and took an active interest inliterature, science and the law, even trying his hand at dentistry andminor surgery. Under James' vigorous rule, he extended royal administration to the westand north - by 1493, he had overcome the last independent lord of theIsles.
With his patronage the printing press came to Scotland, and the RoyalCollege of Surgeons in Edinburgh, St Leonard's College, St Andrews andKing's College, Aberdeen were founded. He commissioned building work atthe royal residences of Linli thgow Palace, Edinburgh Castle and StirlingCastle, and developed a strong navy led by his flagship, the GreatMichael, said to be the largest vessel of the time.
To begin with, relations with England were difficult: in 1495, Jamessupported the pretender Perkin Warbeck in his claim to the Englishthrone. Even so, he was anxious to maintain peace with England andconcluded a peace treaty in 1502. After the death of his mistressMargaret Drummond, who was poisoned along with her sisters, presumably toprevent her from marrying the king, James accepted Henry VII's offer ofhis daughter Princess Margaret Tudor as a bride.
'The Marriage of the Thistle and the Rose' took place at Holyrood on 8August 1503. Although this match had great significance in the long term(after the death of Elizabeth I of England and the end of the Tudordynasty, the two thrones were inherited by James' and Margaret'sgreat-grandson James I and VI), it did not at once improve Anglo-Scottishrelations. When Henry VIII joined the Holy Alliance against France, andEngland invaded France in 1513, James felt that he must assist Scotland'sold ally under the 'Auld Alliance'.
He led his army - one of the largest ever to cross the border - south. The English forces, led by Lord Surrey, inflicted a crushing defeat.James and many of his nobles died at the head of his men in thedisastrous Battle of Flodden, three mi les south-east of Coldstream,Northumberland on 9 September 1513.
