James II (b. Oct. 16, 1430, Edinburgh, Scot.--d. Aug. 3, 1460, Roxburgh Castle, Roxburgh), king of Scots from 1437 to 1460. He survived the civil strife of the first half of his reign and eventually emerged as a masterful ruler who consolid ated his power throughout the kingdom.
The only surviving son of King James I, he succeeded to the throne at the age of six upon his father's assassination (February 1437). Because he was too young to take control of the government, the strong central authority that his father had established quickly collapsed. In the ensuing turmoil three rival families--the Crichtons, the Livingstons, and the Douglases--fought to gain control of the young king. James finally assumed his royal duties upon his marriage to Mary of Gueldres in 1449. His first task was the restoration of monarchical authority. He immediately seized the Livingston estates, but he maintained an uneasy peace with the powerful Douglas family until 1450, when he quarreled with William, 8th Earl of Douglas. In February 1452 he stabbed the earl to death. Three years later James demolished the Douglas castles and confiscated their vast estates. The revenues from these lands enabled him to set up a strong central government and make improvements in the administration of justice.
James then turned his attention to the English, who had renewed their claims to rule Scotland. He attacked English outposts in Scotland in 1456 and 1460. In the latter campaign he was killed during a siege of Roxburgh Castle. [Britannica C D '97]
    ----------
James II (1437-60) Born at Holyrood on 16 October 1430, James II was only six years old when his father was murdered at Perth. James II was crowned in Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh in 1437, the first king not to be enthroned at Scone since Ken neth MacAlpin (843-58). James' minority was dominated by the struggles of rival families for power in the realm and control of the king.
Known as 'James of the Fiery Face' because of a birthmark, he began to rule for himself when he was 18, soon after his marriage in July 1449 to Mary of Gueldres, a devout and cultivated Burgundian lady. Throughout most of his reign, the po werful Douglas family posed a threat to his throne. When he was ten, his advisers had the young 6th Earl of Douglas and his brother murdered at 'The Black Dinner' in 1440 at Edinburgh Castle. In 1452 James himself stabbed the 8th Earl to de ath during a violent quarrel in Stirling Castle, and later defeated the Douglases at Arkinholm. Three years later, the 9th Earl and his relatives were forfeited for treason and in 1458 his Parliament congratulated James on suppressing dange rous law-breakers.
The threat from his overmighty subjects finally removed, in August 1460 James felt secure enough to take advantage of English divisions caused by the Wars of Roses and besiege Roxburgh Castle (held by the English for more than a century). Disaster followed, for as he stood next to one of his cannon it exploded, killing him instantly at the age of 29. He was buried in the Abbey of Holyrood, Edinburgh. [The British monarchy]

Mary and Henry's older sister Margaret of Scotland visited that summer, bringing her six-month-old daughter, Lady Margaret Douglas. She had beenin Scotland for thirteen years but her visit was pleasant enough. Henryhad never tired of lectu ring Margaret on morality (she had married theEarl of Angus after James of Scotland's death at Flodden); this, ofcourse, is laughable when one considers his own matrimonial career. ButMargaret's visit was some ten years before Anne Boleyn entered Henry'slife. In 1516, the king was just seven years into his reign, stillhandsome and bluff. Still, Margaret had little in common with hersiblings after her years away; also, her first husband had been killed bythe English at Flod den Field. -----------------------

Margaret Tudor was the first daughter born to Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. She was married to James IV of Scotland on 8 August, 1503 at Holyrood House. Margaret was apparently not happy in her early days in Scotland, as is evident in a letter she wrote to her father, Henry VII. The two different handwritings in the letter are because the top part was written by a secretary, while the last section was in Margaret's own hand. James died at Flodden Field 9 September 1513. Wh en James IV died, Margaret's infant son became James V. It was because of this union that England and Scotland would be united under one crown 100 years later at the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. John Stuart, Duke of Albany, used the Scotti sh Lord's distrust of Margaret to make himself regent and sent the Queen to flee to England in 1516 with her second husband, the Earl of Angus.

She was married to James IV of Scotland on 8 August, 1503 at Holyrood House. Margaret was apparently not happy in her early days in Scotland, as is evident in a letter she wrote t o her father, Henry VII. The two different handwritings in the letter are because the top part was written by a secretary, while the last section was in Margaret's own hand. James died at Flodden Field 9 September 1513. When James IV died, Margaret's infant son became James V. It was because of this union that England and Scotland would be united under one crown 100 years later at the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. John Stuart, Duke of Albany, used the Scottish Lord's distrust of Margaret to make himself regent and sent the Queen to flee to England in 1516 with her second husband, the Earl of Angus. Her marriage (1503) to James was accompanied bya treaty of perpetual peace between Scotland and England, a peace thatwas ended when James i nvaded England in 1513 and was killed at Flodden.Margaret then became regent for her infant son, James V, but her marriage(1514) to Archibald Douglas, 6th earl of Angus, led to the loss of theregency to John Stuart, duke of Albany. Albany s oon obtained custody ofthe king, and Margaret fled to England. She returned in 1517, duringAlbany's absence, and shortly thereafter she became estranged from Angus. Her favor alternated between the French party of the Hamiltons (Arran)and th e English party of the Douglas's (Angus). James was proclaimed kingin 1524 but was for several years virtually a prisoner of Angus. In 1527,Margaret obtained a divorce from Angus and soon married Henry Stuart, later Lord Methven. James, upon his escape from Angus (1528), joined his
