Joan was his second wife and the mother of fourteen of his twenty-three children. Ralph Neville's first wife (married before 1370) was Margaret Staffo rd (died 9 June 1396; buried Brancepath, Durham Co.), daughter of Hugh de Stafford (born about 1342; died 10 October 1386), 2nd Earl of Stafford, and his wife, Philippa de Beauchamp (died before 6 April 1386). "Note: Ralph de Neville was, on 29 September 1397, created Earl of Westmorland. This act raised Joan Beaufort to the rank of C ountess, and was more a reflection of Richard II's favour toward his uncle, John of Gaunt, than toward the Nevilles (Harriss, Cardinal Beaufort, page 7). Ralph de Neville later played a prominent role in forcing the abdication of Richard I I, and securing the throne for his wife's half-brother, Henry IV (CP, Westmorland section)."
