James I (of Scotland) (1394-1437), king of Scotland (1406-1437), only surviving son of King Robert III, born in Dunfermline. In 1406, shortly before the death of his father, James was sent to France for safety from rebellious Scottish noble s. The ship was seized by the English, and James was kept a prisoner until 1423. Having inherited the Scottish throne in 1406, James was crowned king when he returned to Scotland in 1424. He married Joan Beaufort, niece of the English king Richard II, and granddaughter of John of Gaunt. By 1429 James had forced the Scottish nobles to submit to royal authority. He tried to improve the administration of justice and for the first time published parliamentary acts in the language of the common people. He angered the papacy by preventing church revenues from being sent to Rome. He formed a closer alliance with France and gave his eldest daughter, Margaret, in marriage to the Dauphin, later King Louis XI. James, howe ver, had antagonized the Scottish nobles by confiscating their estates, and he was assassinated in 1437 by a group of nobles. He was succeeded by his son James II.

NAME James "Black Knight Of Lorn" /STEWART/King from 1424-1437.
James was taken prisoner by the English on his voyage from Scotland to France in 1405, and sent to the Tower of London, where he remained in captivity till 1424. On that year he returned to Scotland but wasmurdered by his Uncle Walter, Ear l of Atoll, at Perth.
For the first 18 years of his tenure as King of Scotland James was a prisoner of the English. In his absence Robert Duke of Albany was appointed Governor of Scotland with his son replacing him for the final four years of James' imprisonment .
The English were in no mood to let the young King free as the Scots were allied to the French in a series of battles against Henry V in France. They were amongst the army defeated by the excellent archery and strong English yew at the Batt le of Agincourt.
He was released in 1424 with the threat of Scotland under James not being seen as too great by his captors. It may well be that all that time in an English prison had had a terrible effect on him for when he returned north he had the Duke of Albany and three male members of his family executed for treason. Their lack of success in gaining his freedom being seen as avaricious apathy on their part. It was not only close to home where his decisions were found to be cruel. The H ighlanders suffered greatly at the hands of James. He was, unsurprisingly perhaps, murdered through an act of revenge in 1437 at the age of 42.
He had been married upon his release from London. His bride, Joan Beaufort gifted him with nine children: Margaret, Alexander, James, Isabella, Joan, Eleanora, Mary and Annabella.
