First mentioned in 1467 when married to the Lady Mary, eldest sister of the reigning King, James III, then a minor. He was created Earl of Arran by charter dated 26 April 1467. Four charters being simultaneous granted, 26 April 1467, to Tho mas, Master of Boyd, the designed Earl, and Mary, his wife. The FIRST of these conveyed the isle of Arran, within the sheriffdom of Bute; the SECOND the lands of Stewartoun, Tarrinzean, Turnbery, and Risedalemure, in Ayrshire, and Meikle Cu mrey, in Bute; the THIRD Cavertoun, in Roxburghshire, Teling in Forfarshire, Polgavy, in Perthshire, and the LAST Kilmarnock, Dalry, Kilbride, Nodesdale, Monfodd and Flat, in Ayrshire, and Naristoun, in Lanarkshire, on the resignation of hi s father.
In 1468 Thomas was one of the Commissioners appointed to visit foreign courts to select a wife for King James III. A marriage treaty having been arranged with the Princess Margaret of Denmark, he proceeded with a noble train to escort her t o Scotland. Returning July 1469, his wife advised him of the downfall of this family. He immediately sailed back to Denmark, on a Danish ship, with his wife, where he met with a noble reception suitable to his high birth and real merit. He was attainted along with his father and uncle 22 November 1469. Though absent, and that on the King's and public business of great importance, the Earl of Arran was, without a hearing, declared a public enemy and all his estates were confis cated.
"He travelled thence through Germany into France; where he prevailed on Louis XI to attempt his reconciliation with his Royal brother-in-law, but without success. He then left the French Court, and went to Charles, Duke of Burgundy, who rec eived him graciously, and accepted his services in the war he was then waging with his rebellious subjects. Finding him a brave and wise man, he honoured and supported him and Lady Mary in a manner becoming their rank;- whereupon King James wrote over to Flanders, and recalled his sister." This same source goes on to add that during his residence in the Court of Duke of Burgundy, the Lady Mary bore him a son and a daughter before returning to Scotland.
"The Earl, borne down by the weight of his misfortunes, died soon after at Antwerp, where he was honourably interred, at the expense of the Duke of Burgundy, in 1474. The Duke also erected a superb monument to his memory, with an inscriptio n suitable to the great character he left behind him."
Mary's marriage to Thomas was declared null and void after his death, and she was compelled to marry 1474, James, 1st Lord Hamilton, whose descendants later became Duke's of Abercorn (see Burke's Peerage, 1970 ed.) and had issue by him as w ell.

Attainted along with his father, and forfeited his earldom.
Robert Boyd, created Lord Boyd in 1454, became regent for the infant KingJames III after an accident with a siege gun killed James II in 1460. Hearranged the marriage of the king to a Norwegian princess. This liaisonresulted in the return o f the Orkneys and Shetlands to the ScottishCrown, his younger brother was appointed military tutor to the youngking. The influence of the Boyd brothers on their young charge wasconsiderable. Lord Boyd was appointed Great Chamberlain, and hi s son,Thomas, was married to Princess Mary, the king's sister, with the titleof "Earl of Arran."
The Boyds were viewed with suspicion and when James III grew older thosethat opposed them began to conspire against them, and eventuallypersuaded the young king that the ambition of this family was a threat tothe throne itself.
In 1469, Lord Boyd, his son, the Earl of Arran, and his brother,Alexander Boyd, were summoned to appear before the king and Parliament toanswer charges brought against them. Lord Boyd, realizing that appearancein Edinburgh would result in his death, made his escape to England. SirAlexander, who was already a sick man, was brought before Parliament, anddespite making a spirited defense he was executed for treason.
The Earl of Arran had been abroad on state business, and on learning ofthese events his exile, and was well received at royal courts throughoutEurope. The king, who had now abandoned entirely his former mentors, summoned his sister back to Scotland, inducing her to come on thepresence that he might yet forgive her husband. The deluded princessreturned, and was promptly detained by her brother who procured anannulment of her marriage, she was then compelled to marry the elderl yLord Hamilton, whose family then supplanted the Boyds in nearness to thethrone. The Hamiltons gained not only a royal wife from the Boyds butalso the earldom of Arran.
