1 NAME John // 1 UPDA 2 PLAC Lord of Bothwell
son of James, 1st Lord Hamilton, and of Mary, daughter of James II ofScotland; he was created earl of Arran in 1503 on the occasion of themarriage of James IV with Margaret Tudor.
He commanded a naval expedition against England in 1513 but failedlamentably and returned to find his rival, the Earl of Angus, supreme atcourt. He therefore allied with the Duke of Albany, regent for James V,and was himself from 1517 to 1 520 one of six vice-regents. But in thefeuds of these years he had no fixed allegiance. His most spectacularencounter was the fierce fight between the Hamiltons and the Douglases inthe streets of Edinburgh known as "Cleanse the Causeway" (1 520). WhenJames V freed himself from the power of Angus in 1528, Arran joined himat Stirling
Created 1st Lord Hamilton of Cadzow on 28 Jun 1445, for which hesurrendered all his lands and baronies. Thereafter the town of Cadzow wasknown as Hamilton. His initial loyalties lay with his Douglas kinsmen. He visited, with theDouglas chie f, Rome in 1450 and Canterbury in 1451. He joined withDouglas and the earls of Crawford and Ross against James II, but later hechanged sides, joining the king to suppress their revolt. On July 1 1455he was rewarded with the office of Sherif f of Lanarkshire and on Oct 23was granted a new charter of his lands and baronies.

Architect and noble, known as the 'Bastard of Arran'. The illegitimate son of James Hamilton, the 1st Earl of Arran (1475 - 1529), he became Steward of the Royal Household and Master of Works to King James V, and as such was responsible fo r restorations carried out on the Palaces at Linlithgow and Falkland, together withwork on Blackness Castle. In return for his service, James gave Hamilton several estates, including Draffan (South Lanarkshire) on which he erected Craigneth an Castle as his home (1530).

-------------------------------------------from www.lesmahagow.com------------------------------------
The career of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, his natural son, is remarkable, but being so fully detailed inhistory, the notices of him in this work must be brief.
In 1532 he was appointed baron-bailie of Lesmahagow, and in 1538 he received a grant of the Castrede Nauthane (Nethan Castle) and the lands thereof, also of Crossford. (Reg. Mag. Sig., xiv. 483 and xxvi 210) The castle, of which some ide a may be formedfrom the interesting ruins which remain, was probably a reconstrucion, and it is possible that the site may have been that of a still earlier residence, and of the chapel granted to Lambyn Asa on the lands of Draffan, where t here was service three days a week. That Sir James Hamilton had a chapel is manifest froma curious entry in the treasurer's accounts, immediately after his forfeiturein 1540, which is subsequently given in this book.
Sir Jame's mother was daughter of Lord Boyd, or as some affirm, of Boyd of Bonshaw, in Renfrewshire. Acharter to Finnart, by his father, was confirmed under the Great Seal in 1507,and his legitimation passed the Great Seal in1512. In 152 0 we find him at thehead of 400 Merse men, against the Earl of Angus, in a quarrel between that nobleman, then governor of the kingdom of Scotland, and Ker of Phairniehurst, regarding jurisdiction connected with the Jedburgh forest, which w as claimed by thelatter as seneschal or bailie of the monastery of Dryburgh. The men of the Merse deserted Hamilton in the beginning of the conflict, and five of his horsemen being killed and thirty taken prisoners, he was forced to fly fo r safety to Home Castle, which he reached with difficulty, being closely pursued by John Somerville of Cambusnethan, to whom some accounts attribute the whole frame both of the attack and pursuit. ("History of the Somervillis.")
In April of the same year, when Parliament had assembled to deliberated upon the dangerous powerwhich the Douglases had acquired, Sir James became involved in a street brawl, between the Angus and Arran parties; the object being to apprehen d and controlAngus, whom the Hamiltons dreaded. Sir Patrick Hamilton, Arrans brother, having rushed out with the Arran party upon the Earl of Angus, fell during the scuffle. The Earl of Arran and Sir James fought their way through the co mbatants, and retreated down a wynd on the north side of the High Street of Edinburg, where, finding a coal horse standing, they threw off his burden and rode throughthe North Loch at a narrow place, no one thinking of pursuing them that way . (Anderson's House of Hamilton.") Tytler remarks upon this unfortunate affair, that Hamilton of Finnart was a man distinguished f

James Hamilton (2nd Earl of Arran and Duke of Chtelherault) 1516 - 1575
Regent of Scotland and soldier. Hamilton was the son of James, the 1stEarl of Arran (1475 - 1529) and, through his mother, great-grandson ofKing James II (1430-60). This gave rise to Hamilton's claim to the throneof Scotland. He became Reg ent on the death of King James V (1512 - 1542)and gained his French Duchy for negotiating the marriage of the youngMary, Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587) to the Dauphin of France (1549). Hedemitted the Regency in favour of Mary of Lorraine (151 5-60) in 1554 oncondition that he would get the Crown if the young Mary died childless, however his claim seemed lost when it became clear that the successionwas promised to France. However this planned succession did not takeplace when Mary 's husband, by then King Francis II of France, died.Hamilton then tried unsuccessfully to arrange a marriage between Mary andhis son, another James (c.1537 - 1609).
Hamilton's sympathies swayed between support for Queen Mary and theProtestant nobles who wished to see her removed, undoubtedly because hestill hoped to fall heir to the throne. He withdrew to his French estatesin 1565, returned in 1569, w as arrested by Regent Moray (1531-70) andfinally signed the Pacification of Perth (1572) in which he acknowledgedthe succession of King James VI (1566 - 1625).
