Related to the royal family, being heir presumptive after James Hamilton,2nd earl of Arran, Lennox returned to Scotland in 1542, after service inFrance, to contest the claims of Arran. In 1544 he joined the Englishparty, later led invasions of Scotland, and lived for 20 years inEngland. He married Lady Margaret Douglas, a niece of Henry VIII anddaughter of Archibald Douglas, 6th earl of Angus, a woman of greatambition and ability. Until the death of Mary I, Lennox and his wif e werein great favor in England, but Elizabeth I did not trust them. Theybecame the leaders of the Catholic nobles and succeeded in marrying theirson, Lord Darnley, to Mary, Queen of Scots. After Darnley's death, Lennoxaccused James Hepburn , 4th earl of Bothwell, of murdering him. When Marywas imprisoned at Lochleven, Lennox again became prominent and, throughElizabeth's intervention, was chosen regent to succeed (1570) the 1stearl of Murray. Mary's party, led by the Hamilton s and Sir WilliamMaitland, at once declared war against him. Lennox was stabbed to deathin a raid during the war. His surviving son, Charles, was created earl ofLennox and was the father of Arabella Stuart

Page 512 agrees it was Anne, but says she was "8th dau. of John, Earl of Atholl, uterine brother of King James II"; it goes on to say she was the mother of Matthew (4th Earl), Robert (6th Earl), and John, Lord of Aubigny (in right of his wife)
