The "Kingmaker's" grandfather, the 1st Earl of Westmorland settled abouthalf the original Neville estates on the children of his second marriage,whereas the subsequent Earls of Westmorland were the product of hisfirst. It thus came about t hat the 2nd-6th Earls of Westmorland wereactually less well-endowed territorially than their ancestors who hadbeen mere barons. The pre-eminence of that branch of the familyrepresented by the Earls of Salisbury/Warwick, who stemmed from the second marriage, was madecorrespondingly easier.
The 1st Earl of Westmorland had multiplicity of children: nine by thefirst wife, fourteen by his second. Of his 23 in all, four were peers,three were duchesses and another four daughters the wives of lesserpeers; moreover of those three du chesses one was mother of two kings.Between 1450 and 1455 no fewer than 13 members of the family had seats inthe House of Lords. This very fecundity like that of Edward III,engendered quarrels. There was rivalry between the two branches of thefamily, which grew from a dispute about family estates into a differenceas to dynastic loyalties. It thus served as an overture to the Wars ofthe Roses, one which was made even more ominous by a dispute between the Nevilles, represented by the1st Marquess of Montagu and the Percys. Sixth Baron Neville of Raby, became a Knight of the Garter and 1st EarlWestmoreland September 29, 1397. As a Lancasterian, he opposed Richard IIin 1399 and conveyed Richard's resignation to the convention. He assisted in the coronation of Henry IV and was a member of the council of regencyappointed to rule in the infancy of King Henry V. With his secondmarriage to Joan Beaufort, a widowed daughter of John Of Gaunt, fourthson of Edward III, this favorably affected Joan and Ra lph's wealth and socialprestige, making possible brilliant marriages for their children. In1450, five of Ralph's sons, five sons-in-law and several grandsons were in Parliament.
Held many offices, among them Constable of the Tower of London and in1399, Marshall of England the year he was created Earl of Richmond. Hewas a member of Richards II's privy council, saw service at Agincourt on October 25, 1415 where Henr y won a victory over the superior numbers ofFrench owing to his superior generalship.
He married his first wife Margaret, daughter of Hugh, Earl of Stafford byspecial dispensation from Pope Urban V, because of their closerelationship.
The marriage to Joan, his second wife, was a much more distinguished oneas the line now descends through the royal house of England. summoned toParliament from December 6, 1389 to November 30, 1396.

Ralph de Nevill, 4th baron, summoned to parliament from 6 December, 1389,to 30 November, 1396. This nobleman took a leading part in the politicaldrama of his day and sustained it with more than ordinary ability. In the lifetime of his fath er (9th Richard II), he was joined with ThomasClifford, son of Lord Clifford, and was appointed a commissionership forthe guardianship of the West Marches. In three years after this hesucceeded to the title, and in two years subsequently he was one of the commissionersappointed to treat with the Kings of France and Scotland, touching atruce made by them with the King of England. In the 21st Richard II[1378], he was made constable of the Tower of London and shortly afterwards advancedin full parliament to the dignity of Earl of Westmoreland. His lordshipwas of the privy council to King Richard and had much favour from thatmonarch, yet he was one of the most active in raising Henry, ofLancaster, to the throne as Henry IV, and was rewarded by the new king inthe first year of his reign with a grant of the county and honour ofRichmond for his life, and with the great office of Earl Marshal ofEngland. Soon after this, he stoutly resisted the Earl of No rthumberlandin his rebellion and forced the Percies, who had advanced as far asDurham, to fall back upon Prudhoe, when the battle of Shrewsbury ensued, in which the gallantHotspur sustained so signal a defeat, and closed his impetuous caree r.The earl was afterwards governor of the town and castle of Carlisle,warden of the West Marches towards Scotland, and governor of Roxborough.He was also a knight of the Garter. His lordship m. 1st, Lady MargaretStafford, dau. of Hugh, Earl Stafford, K.G., for which marriage adispensation was obtained from Pope Urban V, the earl and his bride being within the thirdand fourth degrees of consanguinity; by this lady he had issue, John,Lord Nevill; Ralph; Maud; Phillippa; Alice; Margaret; Anne; Margery; and Elizabeth. He was the 4th Lord and 6th Baron of Neville. Also, he was a Knight of the Order of the Garter. In 1398, he was the Constable of The Tower of London. Father: Ralph Neville (1363), 1st Earl Of Westmoreland. Mother: Joan Beaufort (1379); daught er of John of Gaunt. Wife: Alice Montagu (Montacute); daughter of Thomas, 4th Earl of Salisbury. Son: Richard Neville (1428); Wed: Anne Beauchamp. Son: Thomas Neville (1430); Killed in Battle of Wakefield. Son: John Neville (1433); Earl of Northumberland. Son: George Neville (1434-6-8-1476); Archbishop of York 6 daughters: Joan, Cecily, Alice, Eleanor, Catherine, and Margaret. Note: Richard Neville (1400) became the Earl of Salisbury after his marriage to Ali ce Montagu. During the War of the Roses, at the Battle of Wakefield, on 12-31-1460, Richard, along with Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, were beheaded. After Richard Neville's death, his son, Richa rd Neville (1428); (the 2nd Earl of Salisbury) later became the Earl of Warwick on his marriage to Lady Anne Beauchamp, the heiress to her niece, Anne, Countess of Warwick. "Note: Richard Neville was knighted in 1420. He was 26 years of age in 1425, when he married Alice Montagu, who had just reached her eighteenth year. She was the only child of Thomas de Montagu (died 1428), 4th Earl of Salisbury (Warwick the Kingmaker, pages 22, 23). Ramsay, Lancaster and York, Volume II, Table I, gives the year of birth as 1400."
"Note: According to the DNB, 'Neville, Richard, Earl of Warwick and Salisbury (1428-1471),' Bisham Abbey was destroyed during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. During the years of dissolution, tombs were often desecrated, and t he bones scattered."

She married Richard Plantagenet (1411), Duk e of York. Their eldest son Edward Plantagenet (4-28-1441) became King Edward IV of England, on 3-4-1461. Their 3rd son, George Plantagenet (1449), married Isabel Neville (1452), daughter of Anne Beauchamp and Richard Nevill e (1428), son of Richard Neville (1400). Their 4th son, Richard Plantagenet (1452), married Anne ` Neville (1456), sister of Isabel Neville (1451), who was previously married to Edward, Prince of Wales. On 4-9-1483, King Edwa rd IV died, and his brother, Richard (1428) succeeded him as King Richard III of England on 6-26-1483--only to be slain two years later on 8-7-1485, during the Battle of Bosworth. Cecily Neville Plantagenet, Duchess of York , died at Berkhamsted Castle, on 5-31-1495. Ralph Neville's first wife (married before 1370) was Margaret Stafford (died 9 June 1396; buried Brancepath, Durham Co.), daughter of Hugh de Stafford (born about 1342; died 10 October 1386), 2nd Earl of Stafford, and his wife, Philippa de Beauchamp (died before 6 April 1386). Ralph Neville's issue of his first marriage were 'thrown into the shade by the offspring of his more splendid second alliance, which brought royal blood into the family.'"
