Inanna

Inanna was one of the Heavenly Host,
Granddaughter of El.
She fell in love with a mortal against the will of El
and bore a son.
When the son was denied immortality,
Inanna left the Heavenly Host,
swearing that as long as he lived
She would not return.

Long ago and far away
You loved a mortal man.
We understand the gift this is
As much as mortals can.

We know that we are blessed by
Your glory and Your grace–
A Deity with favour looked
Upon a human face.

And all that we can give You is
Our everlasting love.
Confounded, we are bathed in light,
A blessing from above.

A mother's heart will understand
A mother has to give:
No mother can desert her son
As long as he may live.

But there shall come the fateful day
When all's to be forgiven;
With heavy heart You will reclaim
Your rightful place in Heaven

And in our joy we'll cry with You
As much as mortals can,
For far away and long ago
You loved a mortal man.
