Remember When?

Everett Lee Ward recently sent this list of interesting information - a listing of early day Saguache County post offices, totaling 66. Checking the list, I find that ten post offices are still in existence, but two of them (Creede and Wagon Wheel Gap) are not located in this county. Were they ever?

I feel that most of these post offices were located near mining camps, scattered throughout the county. Most of these existed for a very short time. The alphabetical listing is: Alder, Amethyst, Barnum, Biedell, Bismark, Bonanza, Bonito, Carnero, Center, Centerview, Claytonia, Cochetopa, Cotton Creek, Creede, Crestone, Cristonie, Crookstown, Cuenin, Duncan, Dune, Embargo, Exchequer, Garibaldi, Gibson. Green, Haliman, Herard, Iris, Kimbrell, La Garita, Lanark, Liberty, Lockett, Loma, Los Mogotes, Los Pinos, Marshall Pass, Marshalltown, Mineral Hot Springs, Mirage, Moffat, Orient, Oriental, Parkville, Perry, Pruden, Pyke, Rito Alto, Rock Cliff, Saguache, San Isabel, Sangre de Christo, Sargents, Schistos, Sedqwick, Shirley, Spanish, Tetons, Veteran, Villa Grove, Villagrove, Wabash, Wagon Wheel Gap, Watonga, White Earth, Willow.

The above information is from “Colorado Postal History”, by Wm. H. Bauer, James L. Ozment, John H. Willard. Library of Congress Cat. Card No. 70-182741.

“This report, is to the best of our knowledge, a complete listing of the officially recognized post offices that exist, did exist or might have existed within what is now the state of Colorado. The names that are listed herein are those names that were adopted by the Post Office Department, and are not necessarily the same names that were generally accepted by the citizens – then - or now.”
