Remember When?
By Cecil Hall
First published in the Saguache Crescent 28 October 1999 - #136

I recently stated that I was scratching my head to find anything to write about, under the above by-line, when lo and behold, I uncovered another source of good stuff. So, from time to time I will still have a column titled “Remember When” along with my new one called, “How It Appears From Here.” (If I’ve got you confused, think nothing of it, ‘cause most of my life has been spent in a state of confusion!)

Most of the newspaper articles which I will be copying in future “Remember When” columns are not dated, but all of them are more than 100 years old. Those of us with several generations of family roots in the Saguache area will recognize names of pio-neer families.

I think it was about 1967 when our daughter (Nancy Welker) and I were visiting. She said, “Dad why don’t you write down some of your stories about growing up in Saguache?” Shortly after that I started writing “Hall Tales By Cec.”   From time to time, I’ve added stories of other events in my life. I’ve had a lot of fun doing this, and by the time I get to be an old bugger, I’ll have quite a collection. (Probably some of these little jewels are even factual).

Since today’s column is titled “Remember When”, here is an oldie from the “Crescent”:

“The new hotel, opened in the Dallas Block, will be under the able management of Miss Della Hocker, who will have personal charge of the dining room and culinary department. Miss Hocker, by years of experience in this branch of the work, has thoroughly mastered the art; she is neat, tidy and anxious to please, and merits a liberal share of public patronage. Pleasant rooms and good beds. Give her a call.”
(After the above description of Miss Hocker, I am sure I would’ve enjoyed knowing the lass).

I have an olde picture of the Dallas Block which shows a hotel sign above the building which is occupied by Antiques Etc.
