| Remember When?
By Cecil Hall First published in the Saguache Crescent 26 August 1999 - #128 When you finish reading this week’s column I am sure you will agree that old Cec. is scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas of things to write about! So this is a test for old time residents to see how many names you can attach to the following nicknames: The first one is easy who was the Saguache County Sheriff known as “Slim”? Another elected official, known as “Nick”? Longtime assessor and city councilman who everybody called “Pete”? How about the State Senator who represented this district known as “Punk”? The next one should be easy, ‘cause I quite often have written about my friend, “Smokey”, a business man along Main St.? Another good friend and longtime garage man and car dealer, known most of his life as “Fat”? How about this public servant, known to his card playing friends, as “King”? How could anyone ever forget longtime plumber and Road and Bridge employee, “Doc”? “Butch” also worked for the county after many years of meat cutting on Main St.? Both “Moon” and “Shorty” were overseas in some of the same places I served in WWII. “Shiek” was a career man in the Navy. My good friend “Porky” recently passed away he and Mel Coleman always remembered my nickname. I am sure some of you will remember “Cy”, an oldtime cowboy who served in the cavalry. My cousin “Sandy” has been gone for about 10 years now. Next month, another cousin, “Pruney” plans to be here for a couple days. “Spike” goes by my house about three times a day to visit the cemetery. “Bud” is another one you can set your watch by. I’ve often said that my white-haired friend, “Red” has to be one of the toughest people I have ever known. It’s always fun to visit with “Little Jim” and occasionally I run into his cousin, “Cactus” when we are in the Valley. Well, “Punch”, is it time to see how you scored on this wonderful contest of mine - “Teet”. “Slim” is Ed Paul, “Nick” is Clifford D. Fuson, “Pete” is Clifford Burnham, “Punk” is Ernest P. Hazard, “Smokey” is Milo Means “Fat” is Orval Martin, “King is Earl Solomon, ”Doc” is Louis Werner, “Butch” is J. R. Simpson, “Moon” is Bob Fennell, “Shorty” is Joseph Mondragon, “Shiek” is Filiberto Salaz, “Porky” is Glenn Ainsworth, “Cy” is Ira G. Perkins, “Sandy” is Harold Burch, “Pruney” is John R. Burch, “Spike” is Tony M. Lovato, “Bud” is Warren Coryell, “Red” is Delmar Morfitt, “Little Jim” is James L. Curtis Jr., “Cactus” is Ralph Curtis, Jr, “Punch” is Daniel E. Hayes. |
