Remember When?

As a member of Garcia Post #110 American Legion, I would 1ike to share a few memories of. Floyd Smith. Floyd was a member of this Post for more than 35 years where he served as Commander and Finance Officer. He took an active part in the Boy’s State program and enjoyed making presentations at school to honor Junior boys who were selected to represent our School and our Town. In our organization, like so many others that F1oyd was part of - children and young folks were always his first concern.

I’ve visited with Floyd many times down through the years about  our lives and about things we have done. He was married and had two small daughters when drafted to serve in the Navy during War II. He told me that of all the accomplishments of his lifetime, he was most proud of his service in the Navy!

A lasting tribute made by Floyd to our community is his donation of a flagpole and U. S. Flag at Hillside cemetery in memory of his son, Stanley.

I think the last line of the Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion sums up the lifelong philosophy of Floyd Smith – “To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.”
