Remember When?
By Cecil Hall
First published in the Saguache Crescent 9 April 1998 - #77

As I sit here writing this column, it is the eve of a Saguache Town Election. Elsewhere in this issue will be the results of Tuesday’s election. This seems like an appropriate time to reminisce about other elections and recall names of some good citizens who have served our little town. (At some time, I plan to research the records and get a listing of names of all the mayors and trustees, down through the years).

From “The Saguache Crescent” dated - April 8, 1948 - 231 Votes Cast In Town Election. E. B. Noland elected Mayor. Trustees: Fred Curtis, Bob Fennell, Lewis Groy, Dan Howard, Librado Mondragon, Sr., Dr. W. S. Keyting.

Thanks to Alice Wardlow for furnishing me with copies of minutes of 2 town board meetings from 1926 and 1928 — these are of much interest to me, since I knew all of these people except H. B. Means:

A special meeting was held on Jan. 4, 1926 after the fire that burned the “Picture Show Theatre” on the previous nite. “A special meeting of the Town Board and citizens in general was called by Mayor H. B. Means to plan a  more effective means of fighting fire and outline a plan of cooperation of the Town Board with the Volunteer Fire Dept.” Town Trustees R. R. Tarbell and  E. G. Gotthelf made motions to the effect that a committee made up of Trustees: W. M. Slane, W. O. Hammond and E. G. Gotthelf along with Firemen Ray Ellis, W. J. Werner and Stanley Donaldson map out a plan of procedure for the care and operation of the firefighting apparatus, and report to the Town Board at its regular meeting.

The Mayor was authorized by the Board to employ Max Werner to discharge and refill with new solution the chemical fire engines. This is to be done tomorrow Jan. 5th.

From minutes of Town Board meeting held Feb. 8, 1928:
Mayor M. N. Jordan. Trustees: G. H. Hazard, W. M. Slane, Candelario Borrego, E.G. Gotthelf, Eugene Williams, R. U. Tarbell. - “On a motion of Trustee Gotthelf, John I. Palmer is employed to prosecute cases growing out of disturbance last Saturday night and to take such further steps as may appear necessary to prevent recurrence of the disturbance. This was seconded by Trustee Slane and carried unanimously.”
W. L. Hammond, Town Clerk
(My congratulations to our new Mayor and Town Trustees).
