Riki Wilchins ponders the influence of gender on society's aesthetics and erotics in "The problem with 'passing' " from The Advocate (May 13, 2003). "I could have just tumbled out of bed, my hair's a mess, and I've hardly brushed my teeth," Queer as Folk's Peter Paige said at a recent GenderPAC reception. "But when people see me on the street, they always say how much better I look in person. Yet on the set I have a hairdresser, makeup artist, and a wardrobe designer all working to make me look my best." Could it be that the people on the street are reacting less to "how much better" Paige looks in person than how much less feminine he is than his QAF character, Emmett? [more]

Scott speaks candidly about receiving gifts from fans and making personal appearances (you might be surprised at what he has to say). Annie has added several other goodies as well, including new photos. There is an article in a recent issue of the Windy City Times titled, Not Your Average Geek: Queer As Folk’s Lowell on the Struggles of Being the Nice Guy Who Finishes 1st by David R. Guarino.

Randy Harrison
Randy Harrison seems to be enjoying the early part of his hiatus. After participating in the JT Leroy readings last weekend, he was spotted in NYC on Wednesday at Calvin Klein's special screening of the film "Confidence" starring Ed Burns, Rachel Weisz, Andy Garcia and Dustin Hoffman. Randy posed for pictures with actor Jason Weinberg ("Law & Order") and columnist Simon Dumenco. Visit wireimage.com to see a few snapshots.

Scott Lowell will join Michelle Clunie in hosting the RUNWAY event to benefit Destination Foundation on May 29, 2003 in San Francisco. Details are available at the Destination Foundation website.

I've added a link to Sandstorm's Video Clips on the Hot Spots page. Andrea has generously uploaded several QAF scenes (mostly Brian and Justin) and some music videos as well, to share with fellow QAFers. If you want a sneak peek at some of the upcoming episodes, or want to relive some great moments, be sure to check it out. You will need a recent version of Windows Media Player to view the files.

Showtime has released the schedule for the Babylon Tour, with dates and locations for each city on the tour. The new QAF Music Video ("Some Lovin' ", which will be featured on the tour) is now up on the Showtime site as well.

Queer Fear IIRead OUT! is a new interview show on PrideVision TV. It's headed up by former SoGay TV host Mathieu Chantelois, who will interview up-and-coming authors in the GLBT community each week. One of the featured books will be "Queer Fear II: Gay Horror Fiction" from Michael Rowe, whose name many QAFers may recognize from his interviews with Gale, Bobby and Peter in The Advocate. In a recent email, Michael told me that that he is looking forward to seeing the show himself. He said that Mathieu is a lovely guy, and a great interviewer, and that talking to him was "an unequivocable pleasure" (more info below).

Showtime has released a new viewing schedule and it looks as though there will be a new episode (308) this Sunday night, April 27. The following week there will be no QAF episode shown, but the series will continue as usual with episode 309 on May 11. The schedule for Showcase has episode 304 airing on April 28.

There's a new article on Bobby Gant at gaywired.com, written by Ryan Wylie. Gant talks about his "coming out" last year, his fear of being marginalized, and how he feels about his role on QAF this season.

More information on the Queer Fear Fiction Anthology
The dark pleasures and anxieties of the Queer Fear books have their roots in the nightmarish, viral machinations of aids and homophobia, as well as the ghoulish, old-fashioned thrills of confronting things that go bump in the night. The original Queer Fear won the Queer Horror Award, and was a finalist for a Spectrum Award and two Lambda Literary Awards and is described on queerhorror.com as "a striking and ambitious collection of gay horror fiction by some of today's hottest authors and talented newcomers, covering a wide range of creatures of the night and all manner of urban terrors. These dark and sometimes disturbing tales expand the boundaries of the horror genre, with the sexuality of their protagonists a point of reference for the "horror" of otherness that defines and, at times, divides us." Queer Fear II: Gay Horror Fiction builds on the successes of its predecessor. The book is edited by Michael Rowe and published by Canada's irreverent Arsenal Pulp Press. James Huctwith illustrated the covers for both Queer Fear and Queer Fear II.

Some Lovin'
On May 20, 2003 QAF music lovers will be able to get their hands on the new Volume Three double CD from Tommy Boy. The first disc is filled with songs that are being touted as the Babylon "gay thumpa-thumpa", and includes the Murk and Kristine W. track "Some Lovin' (Peter Rauhofer Mix)" with a bonus video featuring Kristine and the QAF Cast. No doubt the mixes will get a lot of play during the Babylon Tour this summer. The second disc is a more emotional soundtrack that underscores the lives of the characters on QAF.
