Movement Against Nuclear Weapons

A PROFILE

The Movement Against Nuclear Weapons was born on June 9, 2000, as an umbrella forum of 32 mass organizations committed to a struggle against nuclear weapons -- in India, the subcontinent and the world. The MANW has now opened its doors to individual members of the same commitment as well.

All these organizations had protested against Pokharan II of May 1998 and all that it represented. While carrying out their own campaigns to educate the public and articulate its protest against the policy and path of nuclear weaponization adopted by the rulers in India and Pakistan, these organizations had also come together in common action on symbolic occasions.

Creation of the MANW gave a concrete shape to their resolve for cooperation on a continuous basis. The MANW is a founding member of the national-level Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace.
