AIRA Site, Savannakhet Laos

The site had a complete spectrum of communications from Fox Mike (FM) HFand UHF for air ops through long haul Single Side Band (SSB) HF. We had secure teletype via the TRC-24 shot (the paddle antenna) to Phu Mu Relay Station in Thailand. It also provided us with unclassified land line communication into the larger US military communications net. In 1968 they installed secure voice which we used with Task Force Alpha at NKP, Thailand. For local communication we used motorola radios, (predecessors to the bricks) and a 50 subscriber telephone company run from the site. The entire site was air conditioned using room air conditioners that helped keep the inside temperature tolerable and the equipment somewhat in specification.
We had a variety of call signs. The site was TEXAS. During my stay we were CAPETOWN on HF/SSB that was used by the ABCCC command and control aircraft. For air operations, we were SMOKEY CONTROL. AIRA had their own SSB net for which there were a number of call signs.
Intel/targets was in the small building straight ahead. The new comm center was to the left.
