Cyclothymia - Controlling Thoughts and Reactions

Dear Jeanne,

Q. cyclothymia, I have been reading about this and the symptoms and well it fits me more like a glove, I really think I could have this problem I have made an appointment with a doc but untill then how can I have more contol over my thoughts and reactions to differnt situations? I'm probably going to get a divorce if things don't change, my wife just can't take anymore she say's. I love her with all my heart and don't want to loose her or my boy's so if you could give us some advise it would be greatly appreciated. what can I do for her? I'm really sorry for the way I am.

A. Randal,

Thank you for your question. Therapy, docs, meds are all ways you can get your mindset back on track, and at your first appointment with a doc or therapist you'll be given some different skills to deal with what is going on. It sounds like you want to get help and in doing this for yourself, you can show your wife and your child that you want to do what's best for them by getting yourself better. That's the best thing you can do. In the meantime, be honest! Sit down with your wife and tell her how you are feeling and that you need her support, that you are taking steps to get help. If a situation presents itself and you don't know how to deal with it, or you feel like you are going to deal with it in an inappropriate way, WALK AWAY. Until you have some skills in how to deal with these situations, my best advice to you is to walk away. There is no need to explain your reasonings, just say, "I need some air" or "I need a break". Support, during times of hurt and frustration, is the best thing you can have for your mental well-being, expand your circle of support and find some peace. I don't know when your appointment is, but I know there are chat rooms on-line where people get together and vent as well as your states local public health services, usually there are groups that meet weekly regarding a wide variety of mental health issues (at no cost). Find somewhere to express yourself, get the thoughts out of your head....if nothing else, write them down! Best wishes to you.
