Alternative to Nardil

Dear Anna,

Q. I have been on nardil for 26years I cant deal with the diet and weight gain any more, I want to get off of them and need to know how and if any other drugs could help. I tried this once before and tried new ssri's but nothing made me feel as good as nardil,but the side affects arnt worth it, could any drug help me after being on this for so long!! I am poor and am not getting the help I need with the states mentel health plan, not even a consistent dr.

A. There is not much I can say in response to this question. Medications affect everyone differently. My advice would be to make a list with your doctor of all antidepressant medications you have tried, then start on the ones you haven't. Unfortunately, any medication chemically related to Nardil is apt to cause the same or similar side effects. Possibly a combination of several different antidepressants (each of a lower dose) might do the trick.
